TV novice

I'm a a hifi man and know nothing of televisions and AV but need new, want a nice picture and some decent sound, not the best and don't want speakers and wire all over the place, so at the moment I'm looking at buying;

YAMAHAYAS101 silver (to match tele. = £166

From richer sounds, get 5 year warranty on the TV. any advice from the AV experts, am I on the right track? My sources will be steaming to Apple TV, net flicks and a playstation.

You haven't really gave us a budget to work from here but if you're willing to up your budget a little bit the 42inch Panasonic st60 plasma tv with the Yamaha ysp2200 soundbar will give you a fantastic picture and top notch sound with very little cables and mess .check out the reviews on both products you won't find a bad one.

to put it into perspective your original tv choice was the same price as your headphones I'm not saying the tv is rubbish but you know what I mean.the st60 sits at the bottom of last years panasonic range but once calibrated it was just as good as the GT and VT range .i have Apple TV and the ps4 and I can assure you they both will sound awesome through the Yamaha 2200.depending on your room size you may even experience rear sound effects from the yamaha2200 and it is not your typical average soundbar (basically a big speaker) it is a sound projector that also decodes Dolby true hd and dts master audio

to finish off I would highly recommend the Panasonic 220 Blu ray player aswell it won the best Blu ray player award in 2012 then you will be set up for years to come.yet again tho budget permitting it wouldn't hurt to go up to the 50inch Panasonic st60.

Thanks for the reply, know what your saying, can spend more but I watch a film once a month, might get into a series on netflixs then not even put the tele on for a couple of weeks after that. My spare time I have is music. Not sure if I really want surround sound to be honest, just some nice sound with some bass for music videos would be good though.

but for the little money I'm spending its all pretty good though? I have a very old lg plasma, don't think it's even got the 1080hd and plenty of image burn.....! And I own two blue ray films...!

Like the look and what iv quickly read on that yamaha 2200 I also have a bk sub I could use with a sound bar? Although the other side of the room, I could cheat with a wire under the rug!

My my room is about 15ftx10, TV in the corner facing the width, will the 2200 work?

Ok I see .cheap and cheerful may be the key here my friend no point in going over the top if you watch very little TV .I wouldn't go too cheap tho .any soundbar will be better than the built in tv speakers and you could pick up a 42 inch led quite cheap aswell.

its a little off topic but I bought the B&W p7 headphones last month .your a hifi guy what do you think off them? In your opinion are they a stepping stone to something better or are they as good as I think they are .they are my first pair of headphones.

My mates room is 23ft long with 9ft ceiling and his Yamaha ysp2200 sounds awesome as can expect there is no rear sound effects tho with a room of that size .from your last post tho you really do watch very little tv and movies I would just go cheap and cheerful it's not being cheap in your case it just makes sense .i wouldn't buy a £1000 hifi to listen to 1 or 2 albums a month.

had some old sennheiser,s then AKG, the AKG,s lacked bass so I went for the P7,s, listening to them now (tvs not on...ha ha) honestly anymore your getting into the levels of very low dismissing returns. Love them, listened to wish you was here (pink floyd) the other day, on my ipad in apple lossless and have never heard the cough and sneeze in the background at the start (something I have used while testing hifi for years) so clearly in my life. Some headphone nuts think your paying for the style, but so be it they are so well built and look so damm cool. Enjoy them.

when I have my boys over they play the playstation a lot, will the cheaper Yamaha give them a thump when required? They are only 9&10 so once again don't need to be the best but think they will enjoy it.

yeah like I said for the amount of tv you watch a reasonably priced led with the cheaper soundbar will do nicely.if you were fanatical about film but on a budget it would be a different story .many people either prioritise film or music .i would sacrifice hifi equipment and buy cheaper gear to buy higher end cinema equipment where as you are the opposite.

i sold my soul to apple last year so this year it will be a receiver and speakers! Then I'm done thank god!

thanks mate, I'll try pop to richer sounds in the week and pick them up, what I'm upgrading from I'm hoping just spending £650 on picture and sound I'll be impressed...!

with the money you're about to spend BB and the money I've spent the past 2 years I hope reasonably priced 4k Blu ray players and large 4k OLED tvs are a long long long way off.i knew golf would have been the cheaper hobby or perhaps collecting faberge eggs!!

What's 3D like? Is it worth upgrading to a 3D model?

Yamaha also does the bar yas201i think with a sub, is that worthy of an upgrade over just the bars what's the bass like in just the bar?

3D hasn't been popular and is on the decline.

Yeah it's a shame really .when done properly 3D can be very very good,if I demoed the Panasonic 3D disc followed by Hugo,Avatar,the hobbit 1/2 the list goes on to most people they wouldn't think twice about giving 3D a chance .but due to poor room conditions ,poor tv and poor choice of 3D movie most people have dropped 3D before it's got a chance to impress them.

ive never suffered eye fatigue yet again because my tv is set up properly ,it varies from person to person of course but I think 3D will be back with a vengeance once they get rid of the glasses.
