If you're wiling to consider secondhand there are some excellent turntables available, such as the AR, Thorens TD 150/160/145, Ariston RD11, Systemdek etc.

Don't know much about the preamp you mention but I see the Musical Fidelity V-LPS is available at good prices, and I would think that the better.

I do like Rega decks and if you could stretch another £100.00 that would get you a new P3-24, if not then your choice of the RP1 is a very good one and won't disappoint (especially as it's ready to play).

Do consider phono stages from Musical Fidelity, Project, NAD as well as Cambrisge Audio. Performance wise you would probably be happy with any.

I can only tell you to steer clear of the Project Phono amps, I've had two (Phono Box II & Tube Box SE II) and dynamics are pretty compressed, a better starter would be Cambridges own Azur 540P.
