After 8 months, my 2 year old pushed over my Panasonic 32LXD700 shattering half the LCD. I'm grateful he wasn't hurt. (For the record, I had looked at stands that it could be mounted on but they all either looked like climbing frames or contained too much glass. I will wall mount the next one and hope he doesn't do a tarzan on any cables).

My household insurance has offerred to replace it with either a Panansonic 32LXD85 or £520 in Argos vouchers (as that's what it costs in Argos). I'd love to just have my old one fixed but that doesn't seem to be an option (btw. the multiscreen option on it allowed us to use it as a 16" LCD on the half of the screen that wasn't shattered).

What to do?

Cry foul and demand an LXD700? Take the LXD85? Take the vouchers and ....

Please help

There are no new LXD700 models to buy anymore, so replacement isn't an option. The LXD85 has the picture quality of the LXD700, but not the sound quality so is technically a step-down model. Have you asked about getting the screen in the LXD700 replaced? If they won't do that, then I'd take the vouchers and wait for the new Panasonic models to surface before making a decision.

First things first. I think you need to sort out the root cause of the problem. Have you considered adoption?

Apparently the Panasonic LXD700 is still available at £699.

The Panasonic TX-32LZD85 seems to be the like for like replacement.

I would talk and explain that to your insurers and see if they will give you £699 or insist on the LZD85.

They always try to minimize claims.

Where exactly have you seen the LXD700 for sale? It is after all a 2007 model.

The LXD700 has fantastic sound quality for a 32" and a great picture when watching SD sources. The 32LZD85 has neither.

Though it is worth mentioning that the LZD85 natively supports 24fps Blu-ray playback, whereas the LXD700 uses 3:2 pulldown (ie the 700 has slightly more potential for judder on slow pans etc).

I've calmed slightly.

I don't really need the SD slot on the 700 since the attached Wii has one. I was never that blown away by the sound quality of the 700 but then I was never able to have it either have it really loud (toddler sleeping) or uninterrupted (toddler awake).

I'll probably go with the vouchers while I ponder my next move but it'll probably be an LXD85. It might be hard to convince insurance people that I should be getting even the smallest of extra features. The other horrible bit is that I've £250 excess and the extra I spent on "Panel Protection" doesn't cover accidental damage - even though he pushed it over deliberately.

Are there new pana's imminent? I'd barely read up on these ones! I'll also *** out and buy the latest mag to make sure I should stick with Panasonic and not go for an Argos LG, Samsung or Toshiba

And I'll put all that's left (the as-new LXD700 remote) on ebay - assuming they haven't banned me for trying to sell a toddler

The new models from Panasonic (and others) are appearing in shops as we speak. The replacement for the TX-32LXD85 is the TX-L32X15 which we should be seeing very soon.

that made me laugh out loud. You could ask that they treat it as a deliberate act of vandalism. Unfortunately, the insurers would sue your child, and seeing as you're his lawful guardian, you'll end footing the bill.
