I believe we have one on its way for a head-to-head with other 46in sets, including new Samsungs and Sonys, plus the 9-series Philips. Still lots to test before we reveal any winners....

AFAIK it's in the building - hard to keep track in pre-Awards product frenzy! We haven't *done* 46in sets yet, so I can't tell you anything about its performance.

And I've had conversations with Philips, who insist that John Lewis - and a healthy selection of independent dealers - will have plenty of 9 series sets in stock imminently, if not already.

Clare, any chance the 46PFL9704 review is going online by Friday, like the Sony Z5500 just posted, as I have a good but tough decision to make! Tec7 are having a 10% discount this week which would make the 42PFL9664 £1350 with a 5 yeear warranty, which considering it was £1700 at lauch a month or 2 ago is great. But the nagging doubt in my mind is if the 40pfl9704 would be worth the extra few hunded quid? (Online prices suggest it will be £1799 although no one can confirm this yet) Any thoughts anyone? Friday come and gone and still no joy of reading 46PFL9704 review
emotion-9.gif
, by the way after reading award issue I went to shop to pick the philips 47PFL9664 but then saw the 46PFL9704 with all the glory side by side and immediately noticed colors were much crispier and sharpness was ten fold don't know if it was because of LED technology.

I made up my mind to buy the 9664 but then read it's up-scaling is not on par with Samsung 8000 series and unfortunately I am still one of those unlucky one who are using SD satboxes here in western EU so good upscaling is must, wondering if 9704 will beat 9664 and even Samsung 8000, with samsung I came across another issue the SCART is via converter and much fussy with SD pictures so it's a no go that leaves me to Philips or Sony W5500, any suggestions? Also I know product of the year went to 42" and not 47" Philips did WHF has noticed any difference of quality btw the wo?

Can I ask which country you live in to have seen the 9704? Here in the UK I dont believe anywhere currently has display models of the TV, much less sell them yet.

Thanks

Would be nice to get an update of when this set is expected for review.

I'm waiting with baited breath also! A potential stunner of a TV I think.

My 46PFL9704 was delivered about 3 weeks ago by a Polish mail order house. I ordered it after extensively researching the current market for a HD LED TV set and after even more researching decided to match it with a Denon AVR-2310, also with a respectable but not over expensive blue-ray player (LG BD 390) and a set of Monitor Audio 5.1 speakers (R series, including the R-One soundbar and a 360 subwoofer). I have also subscribed to one of the HD oriented Polish satellite networks. The speciality shop supplying the speakers recommended some "decent and adequate" (although rather expensive) cables. Generally, you may have noticed, I followed the recommendations of several 2010 awards and chose the winners I could afford.

The system works like a charm. The video and audio quality is superb - for my (and my wife's) taste. However, I never had a fully compatible HD system before nor I even had any of its components. Consequently my judgement is rather intuitive, I am afraid.

I was paricularly keen to have the best possible upscaling of DVDs including the home made ones as I have been shooting and editing amateur videos for many years. This is why I selected the AVR-2310 over the AVR-1910 (also higly awarded) as the former allowed S-Video inputs.

Everything works incredibly (for me) well. So far :)

Best regards

the images on the 9803 are so much better than the images on the 9664...if the 9704 matches the 9803...then its a great great set

hnery,

Can I ask the name of the Polish mail order house you ordered your 9704 from? I've been been holding out for this TV for what seems like eternity with several retailer I've been speaking to suggesting the TV is unlikely to be released this year as Philips is giving them very little information.

Like you, I'm perfectly happy to order the TV from Europe and have been looking at Polish websites as well, but without being able to understand polish it's been an uphill struggle

. So if you could provide any information that would help a fellow 9704 devotee I'd be eternally grateful.

Thanks!

Heinz57,

To facilitate your enquiry, I have simply sent an e-mail to the e-attendant that was organizing my order and asked him whether they have a set available and for how much. I thought that this will be better as larger orders are negotiable (slighlty) in Poland. Also, the mail order houses adjust prices to reflect the current demand. I communicated with the guy about 2 months ago as they originally advertised the set relatively cheaply (but they did not have it !). Then, in the first days of October, I noticed that the mail order house has just increased the price by about GBP 300 so I called the guy and then I learnt that they actually have two real sets in stock. I bid the original price plus GBP 100 and my offer was accepted !

I should have some reply on Tuesday. To-morrow is All Saints' and all (literally) Poles go to visit graves of of their relatives and friends.

Once I know the currecnt situation I will let you know so you could make your decision. The mail order house will expect you to prepay by a bank transfer (what is easy). They use UPS so the delivery is simple, and I assume you live in the UK - another EU country.

Best wishes-

hnery

Heinz57,

I have just received an e-mail from the mail order shop, the same that supplied my set. The current price (including VAT) is 8990 PLN (this is what I paid) but the delivery will take 1 week. This Philips was/is very much in demand in Poland and I would recheck and make sure that they can actually get the set from Philips Poland so quickly. I have some suspision that my set was from a limited first stock and Philips might be struggling to meet the unusual demand (Xmas is coming !).

UPS courier might be expensive as the set when packed weighs 51 kg (it is delivered on a small timber stand/support) and the shop will also add insurance costs. I have quickly checked the UPS Poland Standard Single rates to the UK and for 55 kg they charge 711 PLN. The curent exchange rate is 1 GBP = 4.72 PLN. PLN stands for the Polish Zloty ("golden/gulden").

If you are interested, respond with your e-mail address so I can give you all the details and you could finalize the transaction directly (if you are still interested :).

Best wishes.
