Hello,

just recently purchase a technics SL1210 MK2 turntable and wanted to find out the best amps to use for this. Is the techincs Amp SU-VX800 any good? Or what other amps would people recommend?

thank you

As you appear to have been looking at a Rega before getting the Technics and you make no mention of getting a second Technics I imagine you wish to use it for normal record playing rather than bedroom DJing. Any good budget amp should work fine provided it has a turntable input. Much will depend on what cartridge and speakers you are using. I don't know the Technics but would expect you could do better unless it's at a bargain price. Go check Richer Sounds, EBay and read the forum is my guess. What cartridge and speakers are you using?

Is the amp going to be purely for the turntable or as part of a bigger system.

Are you getting a second deck, if so you'll really be looking at a mixer and power amp combo.

Hello,

yep, will be using for normal record playing and not any DJing. The amp would also be used for CD and possibly radio.

I guess its the regular cartridge which goes with the Technics.

I have sony speakers which are very good.

I just thought that due to the deck being a Technics, the amps also should be

Well, I'm somewhat out of date but DJs tend to go with Ortofon Concordes or Stantons with the Technics. This may be in large part due to the fact that these will take a degree of abuse rather than them being good sounding cartridges though. They will be a good match for the Technics arm at any rate. I'd guess a budget Marantz, Cambridge or Rotel for the amp. Other users with more current knowledge will be of more help than me I suspect. What model of Sony speaker?

thanks again for the reply.

Not sure what make of Sony speakers they are. All I know is that they are good. Do i therefore need to match speakers with the Amp too?

regards

Not essentially, more importantly get a good quality cartridge (something like the Stantons are good) and some decent cables.

Amp wise, yes a Technics would probably match but don't feel you need to go that route. You'll probably find a better match by looking elsewhere.

Find out what power rating your speakers are and decide what your budget is then just test a few in that price range.

Depends on what CD player you're putting with it too.

the only info i can get from the speakers are that they are Rated Impedance of 6 ohm. They are more bookshelf speakers than anything else...

I have 2 Technics 1200s up in my study for DJing purposes. Fantastic bits of kit - albeit rather dated now by modern djing standards. They do look fantastic though!
For your purpose the deck will still sound pretty good, although I confess not to have heard any 'specialist' standalone player.
Cartridges are very important and if you check out the ortofon website and look at some of their carts - the dj ones, I think you won't go far wrong. They look very impressive too (although I know I'll get a bashing for that statement!) Often referred to as 'Concordes' because of how they look. They screw in very simply to the arm too meaning no fiddling around with mountings etc. I have had Stanton's in the past too, and they are also good, although I found them to skip occasionally. As you're not scratching that won't be a problem!
I run my decks through a very old Technics surround sound amp (via a Technics mixer) and the sound is pretty good. It will not rate very highly though for a standalone set-up and I think it got only 3 stars when it came out in 1997!!
I would advise you to look on eBay for some second hand amps by Technics - they were pretty good in their day, will complement your deck (albeit mainly aesthetically) well and there should be some bargains around.
Hope that helps - sorry it's from a DJ's prospective, but they are great players the decks - hope you find what you want.

The SU-A600 or SU-A700 would be infinitely better than the SU-V500. I used to have the 600 and it was a good amplifier. Plenty of them around but they are prone to output stage problems as they get older so test thoroughly. You might also want to look at some of the better Sony amps from the same period.

The SU-A900 would be quite nice if you can still find a second nand one, I think they were 400-500 new, many years ago, so if you could find one they'd be under £100, tank like build, warm sound.

Just bought a SU-900 from Ebay, but when I power it on, there is a defeaning buzz noise which doesnt seem to go. Is this a fault from the Amp? Also when I attach the speakers to the Amp, i cant hear anything?

any comments?
