looking at a new/first system, considering mordaunt shorts mezzos or totem dreamcatcher bookshelfs and for my rear/surround speakers I am considering mounting them on my ceiling. any thoughts on mounting bookshelfs?

Vertically they would be a bit high, about 5-6 feet above ear level, and horizontally would be aligned with my viewing seat but the left side would be a bit close (3 to 4 feet from central viewing seat)... I'm guessing the mounts would allow me to point the bookshelfs down at an angle.

behind my viewing area is open space but is used by a desk and no place to put speakers. I do have a shelf but only on one side of the room and putting one on the other side would be a bit obstructive.

also considering in ceiling solutions - but if the above is a good setup I would probably just do it this way.

I had a similar issue to you - had space behind my sofa but it was taken up with other furniture that meant I couldn't have full sized surround speakers on stands behind me. After auditioning, I went with a B&W system, with the M1s as rears on their B&W stands. Although they are still a bit obstructive, I was able to position them perfectly for ideal home cinema surround speakers, and because they're really small, the obstruction on the furniture behind me is something I can live with.

Thought I'd post this as I was looking at wall mounting and all sorts of other positioning until I realised getting a better sound was more important to me than a bit of inconvenience every now and then. Someone else has mentioned in ceiling speakers, but my thought is, if these are above you, how can they convey a sound coming from behind you?

Anyway, up to you, though I would advise having a look at small speakers in the same range as your front speakers on their own stands and just see if you can live with them.
