Ok, after playing around with my new amp (Yamaha RX-V467), I seem to have come across a problem.

My amp is connected to the TV via HDMI, and the PS3 is connected to the amp, through HDMI. I'm trying to get surround sound to go through but it doesn't seem to be happening.. I thought HDMI supported 7.1? I read a few forums, who say optical is needed, but I don't want to do that, and also don't understand either. The amp has 2 optical ports, but has 4 HDMI sockets. I don't want to run HDMI cables from my TV again, which is why I bought an amp..

I haven't connected the 360 yet, but I expect it'll be the same problems, maybe worse even.. Who knows.

I'll also mention that I'm only using 4 speakers at the moment, since I can't afford a subwoofer and another speaker at the moment, but I still expect the amp can output 5.1, I just won't be able to hear the missing speaker and sub?

I'm getting headaches over this. I spent a lot of money on the amp and really wasn't expecting this trouble.

Thanks :)

Your going to need to dig into the ps3's setup menus and look for the option to allow you to pipe 5.1 to your AVR it certainly does support full 7.1 over HDMI. The xbox360 will do also, I have one of the new versions, but I went into the settings option to set this up also. If you struggle with your xbox let me know and I will check what my settings are.
