Hi all, i want to upgrade my speakers to floorstanders - for deeper bass. The problem i have is that due to room layout they can only be positioned 6 inches from a rear wall - side wall is not an issue. Can anyone please suggest where i could start? My current CDP and amp are both Cambridge Audio 640 - some might say that speakers in my budget is overkill for the amp/cdp, but i want to start the upgrade path and want to begin with the speakers. My music tastes is rock/metal and my budget is approx £750. The first two that sprung to mind was either Bowers and Wilkins 684 - or Monitor Audio RX6 - but these have rear bass ports, i know that they come with bungs for the ports, but does anyone have either of these speakers and if so how far from a rear wall is a minimum? Any other suggestions most welcome. Thanks

That close to the rear wall, even with bungs in, you may run into bass boom problems. I'd suggest 30cm or so as a minimum distance.

You might be better off sticking with your existing speakers and adding a subwoofer for that extra bass extension.

Thanks Andrew for the prompt response - any suggestions for a sub - budget of lets say £500???.
Also how on earth do you connect a sub to a hifi amp?
Thanks again.

I'd go for the B&W ASW610. You can connect the sub to the Cambridge amp using the preouts on the amp, or using speaker cable in parallel with your 685s

Thanks again Andrew - i take it i can use either pre-out, left or right, correct?

In agreement with Andrew that the B&W sub would be a very good option but I have to say that I've had my RX6's very close to the rear wall and they havent sounded boomy or bass-ridden at all.

The bungs do a very good job indeed of muting the mid/bass driver port at the rear so it could be food for thought

... Food for thought indeed.

Really must try and book a home demo, to hear for myself just how close either the Monitor Audio's or the Bowers and Wilikns 'sound' up close and personal near a rear wall...........

I think that the B&W's would give you more of whaty youre used to. For me the 684's sound VERY different to the M/A RX6's (and in all honesty I fell out with the 684's for that reason; for me the 685's sound hell of a lot better)

BUT I think the 685's with a decent sub sound superb! The ASW610 is a lush sub and would perform really well but IMO you cant beat the PV1

yup, d_a_n1979 is correct.

I am using RX6 with rear port covered and my speakers are 9" from the wall. It sounds pretty good to me. But I must also let you know that I am using a subwoofer like Andrew suggested..

Can't afford Monitor Audio subwoofer, so I settle with a lower end subwoofer from Wharfedale SW150..
