The HTB2se is a good little sub, but it's use of the second passive bass driver does mean it loses a bit of speed to some of it's rivals. The RSW12 uses a larger bass driver which can shift more air, and can also reach deeper thanks partly to it's larger cabinet volume. I've never been a REL fan myself, so would prefer the RSW12. You'd have to be looking at KEF's XQ sub to reach deeper.

I have the RSW12 and its amazing.

I did have the R370HD but sold it and saved some money and bought the RSW12 and never looked back.

It really shows some muscle when needed, I have the subwoofer next to my seated position and I dont even know its there, it fills the room.

Peter tyson had some Silver color ones for 299.00 but I think they might have been sold.

Any particular reason why? Given they're arguably the biggest name in the sector you'd expect them to have something going for them.

I notice they don't appear to supply units for review to WHF either, which is a pain.

I think BK subwoofers used to supply Rel with the speakers, and heard good things about the BK subwoofers, but not to many pro reviews out there.

What hifi have one from the gemini range, but they have 5 or so other models which people rave about.

The monolith is massive and heard it is one of the best subwoofers people have heard at this price.

BK take about 1 month to make and deilver as they make to order, and they have a habbit of not responding to emails, but apparantly they are worth waiting for.

I used to like REL in the early 90's - loved the original Strata, and the Studio was awesome, even if it was the size of a small car. Since then they've started making subs smaller, which is probably what people want, but once you start doing that they'll be compromised. With a sub, there is no substitute for cabinet volume and driver size. A sub has to shift air to do it's job properly, and although I used to like the little REL Quake, it's not really going to be used in a serious AV system.

Hmmm, if their room at the Bristol Show was anything to go by they still make massive ones, I was in there for a good 5 minutes before I realised that the coffee table in the middle of the room was actually a sub.

There's no way I could justify something like that in my living room though, so it's the smaller ones I'm interested in, with a full understanding of the compromises.

I don't really see why that should be an issue levelled solely at REL though, from what I can see everyone makes at least one small sub, it's common sense if that's what the market wants.

I have the newer verion of the RSW12 and I'm delighted with it so if you can get the old model in your budget do get one but the BK gets good reviews on some forums so I would consider them at this price range. I was not impressed by the cheaper REL subs but I suppose you get what you pay for!

FrankHarveyHiFi:
You could have a scout around for a Monitor Audio RSW12 - cracking sub for around the £400 mark, and they're normally £750.

I am also looking for a sub for my BR5 package and i have been looking on the internet for a RSW12 myself but cannot find a black ash or gloss black one. Do you know of any place selling in these colour's for £400, i would really appreciate it. Thank's

I bought an RSW12 over the weekend (delivered monday). I paid £395 for it in the glossy Piano Black from hifix. I saw them on the website around Thursday or Friday at that price, however then when I came to order it on the saturday it had gone up to £495. I telephoned them to ask if they would accept £395 as advertised earlier in the week and they agreed. Bargain. Probably worth a shot if your intereseted.

As for the performance....well I'm very happy with it. It replaced an MJ Acoustics Reference 100 mk 2 and it is a clear improvement. Faster, deeper and punchier!

One thing though...it took a few hours of running it in before opening up a bit and after that it sounds fantastic. I have heard that it gets better over a few weeks use too. :)
