Subwoofer humming

Hello,

I have just fitted a new mains conditioner to my av gear, except the subwoofer which sits too far away. But i noticed a whirring humming sound coming from my subwoofer. Could any of you experts out there give me a clue how to eliminate it. Is it an earth loop problem, when i unplug the subwoofer cable, from the amp, the noise disappears. I have seen a cable on on an av website called a QED sr/sw cable with the cable only earthed at one end. Would this do the trick, or would there still be a problem that could damage my kit. I am an electrician so i can understand some technical stuff, but i'm still not entirely knowledgeable on AV equipment. The trouble is i cant get down and do some tests because i'm paralysed from the neck down and have to direct carers, and thats frustrating enough haha.

My MJ Acoustic sub was making a similar noise to what you have described so i took a look at the settings and noticed the high level dial was turned right up due to some little fingers trying buttons and switches i guess and as i have connected with low level connection this was the problem....simple i know but just a thought?

Thanks for your reply.

I will have to look into what your saying. My sub has a digital display, so i will have to look in more detail at the instructions.

Also i have just looked at the tinternet and found a few things about earth loops through cable shielding. One of these sites mention getting a QED Qunex SR-Sw cable as they are directional in that the earth shielding is only connected at one end. I will check the levels first on the sub, if that doesn't do anything i will try this cable. I have seen it for only £30 for 5 m.

I replaced my sub cable with a Chord Crimson and had a hum for a few days - cable was faulty, so replaced and it's been fine since. Quite a common(ish) problem. If you search the forums here, someone has the problem every few months.

thank you for your reply. I have now received my new QED QUNEX SR subwoofer cable, and the humming stopped immediately. So I think because of this and other threads I've read on this forum, the Chord Crimson must have been faulty and it sounds like this is common for this subwoofer cable. My subwoofer now sounds great.
