Imho the Tannoy Arena-lites sounded better then both those, now discontinued but you may find them with stands and grilles. The B&W MT30 will cost twice as much as the Kefs, i prefer the Kefs but the sub is great on the MT30. What amp have you got, or are you looking for one, as the new 3D range is very near and prices look very good. Also what's your room size and budget.

my amp is the yamaha rx-v1800. i've ben thinking about this for some time now and still haven't decided. as per what hifi awards isn't the mt30 better than the monitor audio? my room is 3,5 x 5m and i already own the b&w mt20 so i would only be getting the PV1 if decided to stay with b&w.

Demo & check them out yourself. I personally found the Monitor Audio Radius HD to be better than the B&W MT30. Also, it pairs excellently with Yamaha receivers.

The only speaker package WHF have tested, is the Monitor Audio R90HD10, & this is the best buy in its category. If you replace the front & centre speakers with R225HD or R250HD or R270HD, there is a vast improvement in performance. WHF have not tested this yet. For even better results, replace the R370HD with RSW12 subwoofer (which, incidentally, is cheaper than the R370HD because it's end of line).

Yep. I'd make that ranking B&W MT30, then Monitor Audio, then KEF. But i'd get yourself an audition, pronto - ideally with your Yamaha. The KEFs are damn good with movies, and you could find you don't need to spend more to get a performance you love.

The thing is I live in Cyprus and is not so easy to demo them. And then there is the issue of the demo room, setup etc. bigboss i wouldn't be able to get the bigger MAs as i need the satellites to be on floorstands so it's the r90 with a bigger centre or nothing. I've been leaning on just upgrading the sub to the PV1 for some time now but haven't been really sure to go ahead. Another question i have is whether B&W and KEF are introducing new small speakers like the ones discussed here anytime soon?

From my searches, I have heard the PV1 is not good for the money

But I am not an expert, but heard of lots selling them and buying cheaper more powerfull ones.

But the PV1 does look awsome though

There isn't a style system we've tested that hasn't been improved by adding the PV1.... Which is why it's won more Awards - on a performance-per-pound basis - than any other subwoofer.

However, some people prefer a more obvious, agressive bass sound to the PV1's super-fast, tight, integrated-into-the-action performance - which is why you should really try before you buy.

I'd second the Arena comment, but I'd say go for the full set not the Lite.

Better than MT-30 and 3005SE for films, (more detailed sound), from my demos. I thought the MT-30 sounded dead at the top end in comparison to other speakers. Also the KEF 5005s pretty much matched the Arena for films, it was just music they fell back on, so they might be worth a look. Never heard the Monitor Audio so can't say how these stack up.

BTW find the bass from the sub in the Arena plenty good enough, and nice and tight. Not boomy, obvious, or agressive. Didn't feel as if I was missing anything bass related from the Arena in comparison to the MT-30 when I demod. The PV1 was better than the KEF sub for music by some distance though.

If I was you I'd flog the MT-20 while you can get a decent amount, and get the Arena while it's still available. As it's discontinued it'll probably cost you about the same as a PV1.

These are great: I demoed them a while back

Still don't know why WHF haven't reviewed them yet.

So i guess a good question would be what's the best partner to the PV1 - the KEF KHT3000 series or the B&W M1?

Because we have never received a set for review; despite requesting Focal kit.

With the PV1 going only up to 110Hz what would be a good crossover point with the M1s?

As it's exclusively for movies you need to consider Miller Kreisel Alpha K15 (£93each) and a KX12 sub (£399). I have upgraded to the MK M series but i had an MK K series for 6 years they are fantastic with movies. When i was asking about upgrading i was talking to a couple of independent AV shops and i asked about the B&W and Kef eggs and was told i had already moved past them with what i had which was MK K's (alpha). I strongly recommend MK for movies.

Ok Clare, fair enough.
