Strange Dynaudio listening experience

I've been looking for some £500ish speakers for a while. Initially thought floorstanders, but began to realise that I'm more of a stand-mounted kinda guy.

I've listened to B&W 685S2, CM1, Kef LS50, Monitor Audio Bronze 2, Gold 100, Kef R100, Focal Aria 906 among others. So some way over the target price!

I've been listening to classic rock/pop/folk/country as well as classical (orchestral, chamber, opera, organ).

Today I popped along to listen to the Dynaudio Emit speakers - the M10 recently received the most ravey of rave reviews here recently. After re-calibrating my ears with B&W 685 I asked for the M10s. How interesting! I was slightly looking for great things and initially I felt I was getting them - sweet treble and taut mid-range definition - but once the bass kicked in, I was aghast at the "boomy sound" that was worse than the classic "one note bass" that afflicts some small speakers. I tried a few other tracks and tried moving the speakers around, but this problem persisted.

When we put the M20s on, the situation was vastly improved. Still the same sweet treble and a very neutral performance (almost clinical) but a very well controlled bass. Lovely speakers, but I couldn't help but feel more love towards the B&Ws - which were more coloured, but I liked the colour.

Clearly more testing needed at home, as I'm very suspicious of the speaker stands' contribution to today's session (they'd removed the rear spikes from the shortish stands to get the speakers to point upwards!)

The bass can be problematic on Dyns. It is certainly an aspect of my DM2/6s that I find rears its head sometimes, and those are very similar to the new Emit 10s that have replaced them. At present my Q 2020i are giving me more musical enjoyment.

Great little speakers for the money, especially with the proper stands.

if you do reconsider floorstanders, the big brother Concept 40s can be picked up for £500 second hand. They really are great value too.

I did audition the 3050 a while back and it was one of the things that put me off floor-standers. The concept range is a bit different, though - I've not tried them.

On your mission to get the perfect speakers for your set-up i urge you to try speakers by Neat they are absolutly fantastic sounding despite there tiny size, like you i trully cannot do bass boom Neat seems to have figured this out with astostioning bass despite there compact size.

I was fortunate to buy a pair of there motive 2 floorstanders and i have to say im totallty gobsmacked buy there sound.

Bass with true insight but without that awful boom

mids OMG its almost like the singer is in the room with you WOW

HIGHS unforsored natural bewt.

Good luck with your never ending search.

I think the whole speaker & floor standing speakers is about setup & room size & pairing with other Hifi equipment. I found the 3050's very tight & musical. On the other hand the neats i found to be tight as well but had the tendency to emphasise the "S" & "T". Am using the 3050's right now in a second room driven by Quad Vena amp & it sounds very good indeed.

Edit: When I listened to the 3050's in the shop with the Quad amp it sounded really good, but on getting home the bass boom was so bad I almost returned them. The 3050's needs a lot of running in before the bass settles dwn, boy was it worth the wait. The more expensive Concept 40's were a little to forward for me & again this will depend on preference & presentation your looking for.

Always demo at home were possible.

I Agree about room arrangement but im not finding the emphaise on s&ts at all.

In fact for the very first time the Mrs has acctually commented on how the music sounds good.

believe me thats acctually an amazinig comment usually its turn that racket down, the neats can go extremmly loud without shouting im sooo impressed by them i cannot believe i didnt seek them out sooner.

Regards

Yes of course, like I said its all system dependent. If you need speakers you can place close to walls then the neats are the ones to demo. The bass ports are situated underneath the speaker, hence is less fuzzy about placement.
