I've been looking for some £500ish speakers for a while. Initially thought floorstanders, but began to realise that I'm more of a stand-mounted kinda guy.
I've listened to B&W 685S2, CM1, Kef LS50, Monitor Audio Bronze 2, Gold 100, Kef R100, Focal Aria 906 among others. So some way over the target price!
I've been listening to classic rock/pop/folk/country as well as classical (orchestral, chamber, opera, organ).
Today I popped along to listen to the Dynaudio Emit speakers - the M10 recently received the most ravey of rave reviews here recently. After re-calibrating my ears with B&W 685 I asked for the M10s. How interesting! I was slightly looking for great things and initially I felt I was getting them - sweet treble and taut mid-range definition - but once the bass kicked in, I was aghast at the "boomy sound" that was worse than the classic "one note bass" that afflicts some small speakers. I tried a few other tracks and tried moving the speakers around, but this problem persisted.
When we put the M20s on, the situation was vastly improved. Still the same sweet treble and a very neutral performance (almost clinical) but a very well controlled bass. Lovely speakers, but I couldn't help but feel more love towards the B&Ws - which were more coloured, but I liked the colour.
Clearly more testing needed at home, as I'm very suspicious of the speaker stands' contribution to today's session (they'd removed the rear spikes from the shortish stands to get the speakers to point upwards!)
