starting out with flac then sonos

mmm,first post no worky!

looking for advice and suggestions. just got new pc with 2tb hard drive,now i wish to put my cd collection on the pc in the flac format. i will of course buy a NAS when i have funds.

the purpose being so that i could then obtain a sonos system to use in conjunction with my exsisting set up,that being a cyrus 8 amp/cd (also have onky875 for av). i suspect that will require a zp90,however would i require a bridge? i currently have cat 6 all around the house,and specifically running to my current set up(i use a ps3 to stream music to the onkyo at present). i would also like when funds allow to obtain the play3/5 for differnet rooms in the house and for outside use when or if the summer finally arrives.

again when funds allow i would like to get a tablet to control all of this in my front room

Any advice? i really dont have the foggiest on which software to use for ripping/playing.

Only one Sonos unit must be wired to the network, so if you can do that with the Sonos CONNECT (was ZP90) you're good to go.

Ripping to FLAC on a PC, most folks use dbPowerAmp, MediaMonkey or Exact Audio Copy, dbPowerAmp is supposedly the easiest to use.

(P.S. You'll likely wany a 2Tb USB disk for backup, losing a lorra, lorra rips would bad :doh

Use DBpoweramp if on a PC because you can also rip mp 3 at the same time for Ipods/Itunes etc, also very easy and you can correct and add artwork as you go.

I use Vortexbox software as it does the same thing, but with less features, but you put the CD in and come back when done.

I hardwired/connected my ZP90 Connect to the router as it is in my study and I have audio in there anyway. Every thing else works off the Sonos network from this. No issues since installing all my kit. You can use a bridge to do the same thing if you don't want audio in the room where the router is placed. A P5/P3 will do the same and act as the connection to your library through the router if you hardwire either.

Me, I (sadly) physically drew up a plan to ensure that everything would be in range of each other and that all would work as I expanded the system. Please go to the Sonos Forums as they have a section for newbies, which is very helpful.

thanks for the info guys.

So i could get away with the sonos connect attatched to my cyrus amp via ethernet in the major listening area. my router would be in my study,upstairs along with the pc.

Anybody tried j river media center for ripping/playback? seems like a good deal for 40 us$dollars compared to dbpoweramp which is about 46$ but appears to have less bang for your buck.
