Hi,I've decided to go back to standmounts to replace my Kef iq5 se.Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 or Monitor Audio RS1 for 40 quid extra?

er, ive just got a pair of rega rs1s via ebay, for a shade over 200 quid, and they are, rather rather splendid!

Amazing. If you read up about them it says that they dont mind being close to a wall. They are rear ported, but doesnt affect them attall. I would reccomend them, the detail of the music is fantastic. I took a long time to choose my new speakers. Also the bass if fine for me, dont think its to light attal, since its a small speaker. Go onto rega website and it admits the rs1 is basically the same as the rs3 model, but obviously the rs3 has an extra bass unit on its side. fantastic speaker, classy, and handmade....

sold via linetone audio i think they were called in gateshead.(via e bay of course)

yeah thats it, i rang them up, they were very freindly and helpful, paid over the phone, delivered to my work address, they got to my work the next day, and then in my living room that night. Super service!!!!

The Rega RS1's really need to be heard by more people in the market for sub £400 stand-mount speakers. They are so good. Midrange clarity is superb.

Rega could easily sell them for £500 and customers would not feel cheated.

If (a) Rega did them in Maple or light oak, and (b) I had not got such a stunning deal on my (maple) N-Sats then I would have the RS1's now.

I'd say go for the MAs as an absolute minimum, but the Regas would make an excellent purchase.

Also well worth looking at the Quad 11Ls. Beautifully finished, detailed, natural sounding and full of life - though they need plenty of power behind them for these attributes to shine through (and I mean power/current rather than sheer volume).

have never heard the Quad 11's but many people who have owned them have stated that bass is almost non-existant?

The problem with the Quads is that they need very careful matching. They are very revealing speakers and need plenty of good quality power delivery from the amplifier. I've noticed that they work best with amps that have a decent sized toroidal power transformer (like the 650A or the Rotels).

The problem with bass is that many systems completely over-blow it and add bass that just isn't there in the original recording. The Quads reproduce bass notes cleanly but, to my ears, just the right amount of weight. What really makes them special is the midrange and treble. Not only are these beautifully integrated but vocals sound absolutely superb. They aren't bass monsters, but the Quads are just that bit more refined than most speakers at the price point so I guess it comes down to personal preferences in the end.

To establish some context to my comments, I'm not a bass head really. I like to hear what is under-pinning the music and I like it to be tuneful and reasonably weighty, but most music happens in the mid-range and if that isn't right it becomes impossible. I think that is why I like NAD gear so much. The bass performance tends to fit my requirements perfectly, whilst their fluidity in the mid-range and the excellent current delivery of the amplifiers helps to make music effortless.

The other speakers that really have to be heard are the B&W 685s. Again, they need very good quality partnering electronics, but they can sound very involving indeed, though with a darker tonality than the Quads.

thanks for that Matthew ... when I bought my Pioneer A400, many people suggested the Marantz CD63 MKII K1 signature cdp aswell as the Quad 11's (1st version) would be a good match for the A-400

then I read some posts where people mention that the quad 11's were lacking in bass

I have always favoured more bass/old fashoned 'warm' sounding speakers and have always fancied the transmission line speakers (IMF TLS80 etc) ...

so I opted for the B&W DM2 transmission speakers instead .... as at that time, I could not afford the IMF TLS80's (and still cannot)

I can say, that I am delighted with the DM2's (bass is strong and you can 'feel' it) ... and treble and clarity is superb (same tweeters and supertweeters as the old spendor bc1's) ... however, they perform best with a strong amp (80+ watts @ 8 ohm)

Rega Forever...

Till i decide to go crazy and pick up some splendor A5's!!!!
