Squeezebox / External Hard Drive / Ipod Touch Question

I have Squeezecenter and my music collection stored on an external hard drive connected to an old PC.

The PC is a bit clunky and unreliable so I am looking to upgrade the “music server” element of my setup.

I have considered a NAS but most reviews say they are temperamental with Squeezecenter or expensive, so I am considering other options.

Is it possible to connect an Ipod Touch to the external hard drive via the connector and use the Ipod as the music server?
