Speakers or rather second hand speakers, sigh.......

I have been frequenting ebay--uk these past number of week always trying to uncover and purchase real nice sounding speakers (mostly from yester-year tbh) yester-year speakers as I don't have much free cash to splash around what with being phisically challenged due to me being infirm and on benefits sadly due to ops that have not quite worked in the manner that they should have, namely three diff ops upon my lower spine.

Not looking for charity as such .... but has anyone noticed any 'trends' on ebay that I can use to get in there quick or something ?

I always lose out when it comes to the auctions and most buy it now prices are too expensive even for normal/ordinary-- tho sometimes decent sounding speakers from even 20- or more years ago and not always in half decent condition either, very frustrating tbh !

The best main speakers that I have are Eltax Liberty 1+, nice enough sounding but when I read all of the differing pages about speakers on here now for ages I often wonder as to just HOW these other/better speakers sound and sadly from experiance it'd seem that I may never find out.

So are there any tips for ebay listings so as I may get in there, so to speak ?

I've found that patience is the key on eBay. When I've bought stuff like this in the past for my kids, I have a set budget, and only look for speakers in my area with low start prices. That way, they'll either go for more than I want to pay, or I'll be the only bidder. I picked up a pair of Wharfedale Diamond for my daughter for a tenner and a pair of JPW Mini Monitor for 99p in this way.... so, depending where you are, you may snag an absolute bargain!!!

Alantiggger, there's some tips in this thread:

I think you'll find it very easy to get speakers that you'll prefer to your Eltaxes.

Thanks fella's for all the reply's

I will keep an eye open and hopefully snag a proper bargain.

Not been on of late, my pain after they three spinal ops seems to now annoy more than they did even at the time ..... and it wasn't nice back then.

Lol, 53 years old now and still looking to see IF I can get some bargain, anyway, the hunt goes on, I am sure that I will one day find a decent pair, thanks for your help all the same.

Sorry to read about your health issues, Alant.

As regards the Eltax speakers, my friend had the Liberty 5+ floorstanders with a fairly 'low rent' Sherwood amplifier many moons ago. I remember he replaced them with Mordaunt Short 914 (not the 'S' or 'i' version or what the letter was), and he was disappointed by the MSs sound. I suppose it'll boil down to which amp you have, but those Eltax speakers punched well above their weight given the price.

If your budget, however, can only stretch to around £100 (just guessing) then somehting like Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 should yield a noticeable upgrade over the Eltax.

The only advice about auction site buying is to wait until the last few minutes and then add you max bid. Like you I've had several feeble attempts in the past. Might be worth having a bash at these.

Or if you can stretch your budget to Q Acoustics, these could fit your needs.
