Speakers for TV suitable for hard of hearing

At the moment I need subtitles to watch TV and this is very frustrating as they are not always accurate.

My new LED/LCD has even worse sound than my sony CRT TV so I am looking to buy a sound system to go with it.

My options are a hi-fi amplifier (which I can also use for the ipod) and speakers or a Sharp sound bar. Audio T advised me to get speakers with a more rigid tweeter(i think that is what he said!!) so that the treble is enhanced. Can anyone help me make a decision on this. Without the option to listen to each system in a demo room it is very hard to decide which to buy.

What's your budget?

My father had a similar problem - he's found a Yamaha soundbar an excellent solution (including adding a wireless iPod dock so he can enjoy music through the soundbar, as well as TV and radio)

Point taken about subtitles - my father is very hard of hearing, and whenever I visit he has subtitles running: there are some hilarious howlers in them.

If it's just you watching, a better solution might be wireless headphones. Just a thought – actually wireless phones would also do the job if there are others listening, too, provided your TV has line audio outs.

Haven't tested the new Panasonic soundbar yet, but hope to - looks interesting.

In the caae of the Yamaha soundbars, various models can use either a plug-in iPod dock or Yamaha's AirWired accessory, which plugs into your iPod and transmits wirelessly to the soundbar.
