hi 2 all 🙂, after reading the master handbook of acoustics, many forums, what hi-fi mags (of course) and everything on wikipedia about music and sound, i still cant decide what speakers i want....heres the short of the long...i have my shed which is tiny soundproofed and acoustically treated...i have my decks placed in the middle of the room and will have the speakers i choose in the corners facing me a mere metre away...i play trance music...i have a friend who uses yamaha hd80s which has made me think about the smaller ones....but im not sure as i read about there hard on the ears... i have a long list with all kinds of speakers and amps...at the top is the atc scm 11 with the cyrus 6xp...please help me...i dont mind paying as i have become a proud audiophile....price range is around £2000...any hows thanks alot for any replies....

It may depend on what Amps your going to use cause I noticed yu mentioned DJ'ing, If you use a PA Amp with your DJ Equipment you may need to buy speakers with Speakon or 1/4" Jack Connectors.

IF you have a Maplin near you IF you are using a PA AMP, they do sel speakers pretty cheap. I have a pair of the 800Watt Pro Sound Speakers for my PA ran from the Pro Sound 1600 Amp and man what a sound they give out!

Good Luck!

If you are routing everything through your mixer then I wouldnt invest too heavily in the speakers. The pre-out on the mixer even the top flight Vestax or Allen & Heath units will cancel out a lot of the benefit of the speakers.

I have had countless amps and speakers on my decks from £200 to £3000 and in a small room with smaller speakers you wont need too much. Currently I run an Exposure 2010 power amp but prior to that the Harman Kardon HK980 worked wonders as well.

Speaker wise a small punchy unit will be ideal - B&W have a good range that will be tight in the bass and have enough zing at the top end to make mixing simple. Try to keep your speakers out of the corners if you can. It will make the bass boom slightly.

hi and thanks alot for your replies...to cjackson about the p.a system, i already have 1 for parties and have used it in the past. it just didnt give me what i wanted...was quite a mess to be honest...to the home cinema, i havent thought of that, but its a pioneer djm 800? top of the range, with all the spec's to go with it...any how i will be looking into that right away....i like the b&w cm1s, and agree with you completly...what do you think about me using a yamaha monitor? bit much for a 2 hr set? and finally, were do you suggest i put my speakers? thanks again 🙂

Hi

I would look at getting some near field active monitors rather than hi-fi speakers. These would suit your room size and speaker placement better. These would also server you well if you started producing your own music. I would recommend going into a music shop which sells Dj gear etc and see what speakers they have.

Cheers

jay

are you DJ'in in something like a bedroom or a small function room ?,

I
tried to use an integrated amp once just your average joe amp I tihkn
it was a techncis for PA. What an absolute cockup that was. A room with
150 people and it stank!

I just couldnt get the range through
the speakers. They where Wharfedale Zaldecks I think I cannot remember
now I have a Numark DM1200 Mixer. I always put two speakers on the floor but tilted upwards if I'm up on a stage and two speakers in the air. Thats a nice Mixer you have there. If you are going to do a 2 hour set also you'll notice PA amps have a few fans in too keep them cool and normal home cinema amp may just go bang after an hour and a half of high volume.

I Know I've tried it!, if you need any help regarding PA giz a shout!

A mate of mine has a set of 1210's with that pioneer mixer.

He runs it through a marantze amp he got in richer sounds and has a pair of mission 731i's and Monitor audio Active sub i sold him nearly 10 years ago. Id had the 731i's about 5 years before that and they are still going strong.

As the lads said, a set of active monitors would better suit a system run through a mixer.

If you want something seriously capable, id suggest these ATC SCM10-2's http://www.hi-fiadverts.co.uk/uk/infoadv.php?advertid=4643

they are £1400 and are active so have built in amps so can run directly off your mixer with the correct cables and are proper studio monitors able for some serious volume levels

thank you matt, i have the new 2000 cdjs aswel as the 1210's....i like the look of them speakers...nice to hear someone tell me from experience that active monitors are better...my poor head is done in over the whole thing...im going to go for them speakers and bite the bullet...cant believe i couldnt find some information on this before i had to ask myself...hopefully them scm 10's are the job 😀

No problem. I used to enjoy goin on the decks at my mates or at house party's. Im concentrating on making my own music these days on my Roland MC909 groovebox. Early days yet, only a couple of tunes made.

Get hold of the people selling those 2 sets of scm 10-2's and suss them out because there is a big difference in price between the 2. And google them too and see if any more for sale. Here's a review

There is also the scm20-2a which is bigger and more expensive.

Hard to find too. But i would say once you hear the scm10-2's you will love them and be happy with them and considering the small room to be used in, they will be plenty.

You will probably get XLR terminated cables with the ATC active speakers and i presume your mixer has RCA pre out outputs on it so you will probably need these to be able to connect to the mixer http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Cardas-Female-XLR-to-Male-RCA-Adaptors-Pair_W0QQitemZ390137367667QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item5ad5ffcc73

hey 🙂 first of all, you have ruined my tuesday 😛 why would you point out speakers which are a nightmare to find...im really happy you pointed them out..but they arent half hard to find...so hard i willing to buy them now this second...haha glad to hear your producing...what kind of music? done a little bit myself but couldnt find a programme i was happy wit..started with cubase, reason then fl...would love to find a set up were i happy to mess around and then get busy....any hows i just like to mix now its a kinda quick fix...before i go could you suggest where i could buy them speakers new? i think they have discontinued which is sad...any hows let me know what your making as i have proberly mixed it at some stage 😀

Here's 2 pairs for sale but in america so you would need to check with ATC if they can convert to uk voltage. And they may cost a few hundred to ship due to weight. I think they are discontinued but they still make similar spec that just look different.

I definitly think the 10-2A's will be plenly for your room. Take a listen to those first. They are bomb proof and capable of serious volume.

These are pretty much the 10-2A's replacements http://www.atc.gb.net/scm16a.htm Approx £2200

And these are the 20-2A's replacement http://www.atc.gb.net/scm20aslpro.htm Approx £4000

As for my music, I suppose its kind of like The Prodigy. Techno/Drum and bass. Im trying to make some uplifting trance but it always ends up real Dark and freaky with heavy bass rhythms. Ive loads of loops made as idea's for tunes but where i struggle is making a loop into a complete tune without it all sounding the same. Thats why ive only completed 2 tunes so far, both about 5 or 6min long.

thanks again....yea i love uplifting trance...but anytime i try make music it turns into hardhouse in less than a minute...yea those speakers ugly 😀 i think im in love with those 10's...i sent a mail asking about them and told him i would pay more than the person who looks like to get them this friday....ha im from dublin...id get the boat for them....any hows what do you think about the scm16a's? would they be as good as the 10's? also what do you think about the yamaha hd50's? im going to ring a few places tomorrow....thanks again 😀

Larrylamp...

For 12 years I have DJ'd in nightclubs, function rooms, have my own studio and believe me you don't need a real audiophile sound system for what we do unless you create your own tracks!!! With mixing especially trance, the bass as I'm sure you know is the main sound we listen for to beat match, so without doubt you need a set up with good bass response. I have a Cyrus setup (see below) but that is for my own pleasure, not for blasting music through but to enjoy at sensible volumes and using cd's... Don't go spending loads of money on speakers and an amp for djing with it's not worth it especially if your mixing on vinyl...

Have a look at What Hifi's speaker ratings, go for a set with a high DB rating so they are easier to drive especially at loud volumes and go for an amp that packs a punch (ideally Marantz with bass and treble control). If you have set the mixer up right you can adjust the bass and treble on an amp without it affecting anything you may want to record. I'd stay clear of Cyrus due to the fact you don't have bass and treble control on them, there's nothing wrong with Cyrus, infact there products are way to good for what you intend to use them for unless you get a setup for mixing with and then a setup for your listening needs like me!!!

Yeah love a bit of Hardhouse when im in party mode.

Did you look into both those sets of the 10's?

Funny, im livin in Dublin too.I would think those 16's should be as good as the 10's if not better. Send music craft an email about them if the 10's dont work out

The lads are right though in saying you dont need something as good as the ATC's for purely mixing. If you do a bad mix you'll definitly hear it

but if you are thinking of producing with them also then the best is what you need

haha a fellow dub...yea iv me fingers crossed i get those 10's...and all the others are pending aswell...sent them all msgs...hi to papasmurf 😀 glad to hear from you...what do you think about these atc 16a's? also what do you think would be the best set up? im tinking bout the yamaha's and the atc's...i cant find anything about listening to a monitor non stop for a couple of hours...i thought they were for short periods of time and not contunious....thanks alot for telling me to stay away from the cyrus, do love the look of them....so what do i do? wish i get them 10's if not them 16s are goning to cost.....but i want to give myself the best possibly set up.....and matt there's not a chance of me having a bad mix lmao 😀

Good man, nobody likes a double beat

Only problem you have is not being able to listen to the likes of the ATC's without going over to England. You wouldnt be dissapointed thats for sure, but you could listen to and buy a pair M Audio or KRK active monitors in Ireland and enjoy them just as much for half the price or less.

You could make the trip over there for a listen and maybe before you do, go to a shop in Dublin for a listen to some Yamaha's, M Audio's or KRK's so you know how the ATC's sound in comparison.

As for the listening for short periods, do you mean can the speakers handle being played for long periods?

Im not sure about cheaper monitors ability if you play loud for long periods but the ATC's are made for it.

Ive a pair of PMC DB1i's that i just melted the bass drivers in playing too loud for too long. Im replacing them with ATC SCM19's

hey 🙂 have been looking for speakers all day 🙁 have a few bids in for the scm 10's and dont know if i have two and a half grand to spend on the new 16a's...what do you think personally...any good near feild monitor will do? i have found the focal cms 65 and 50 which are 1100 euro and 800...im getting worn out thinking about them and reading....need to get back to enjoying life..i was talking about listening to monitors for long periods...also i heard that studio monitors could be very flat and a unsatisfying listen....any hows thanks alot for lstening and answering....

A friend of mine bought some M Audio active monitors in Dublin for ?500. Anything like that will be plenty good enough once it is either a sealed enclosure or front ported(rear ported will be no use for confined corner placement), but i wouldnt personally buy anything cheaper even just for mixin cos it will be cheap rubbish.

Something like these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/KRK-Rokit-RP8...Elec_SpeakersPASystems_RL?hash=item5882e00dcd

Or these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/M-Audio-BX8A-..._Consumer_Professional_RL?hash=item4cecfbe3a8

would probably be plenty good enough but go and listen Somewhere in Dublin in that price range before you buy. And if you play them really loud most the time then they might not be good enough.

The likes of these would be amazing like the ATC's They have high power handling and a max SPL of 113db
emotion-2.gif

These also

Both overkill for mixin like the ATC's buy depends what you want. If your still looking at spending this much id definitly try for the ATC's before the Focal's

hey thanks again....was looking at them focal solo 6be's...and only because of the focal utopia range...haha....ny hows im lookin at 1500 4 those solo's....im really worn out from all this reading on speakers...im at ease with yourself saying i cant go wrong and i will be happy with them....thanks again 😀

If you want something bombproof, you could try some genelecs - we have them at work and they have withstood Dolby engineers doing surround test and line-up monitoring at 'reference' level (Imagine 8 jet engines on full throttle in a small room), massive power wallops and inadvertent routing into them of dolby 'E' data signals (white noise on steroids) whilst cranked right up and they're all still going strong. They have a clean, clinical and very precise sound. Here's a pair on ebahay:

Good luck

Rob
