I have a large sitting room (8mx4m) with an open vaulted ceiling (single storey old cow shed!). My current system from 15 years ago is:

CD played Marantz CD52 II

Amplifier Denon PMA 250 III

(Tuner is Denon TU0260- which I have been told is a clssic and I should stay with it)

Speakers: Tannoy 6o5.

This system was bought for another house and I feel (rightly or wrongly) that the speakers are the weak(est) point in my system. I am going to Sevenoakes to listen to some other systems including speakers. The lady at the shop has said that with a large room and my taste in music (classical/opera/easy listening) I should be looking at floor standing speakers. So my question is:

a. Do you think I am on the right track with the speakers (i.e. weakest link in my system)?

b. If yes to above, do you think floor speakers are the right place to start?

c. If 'no' to a. then where would you start with the upgrade?

c. Either way what speakers would be worth listening to.

My current system was bought by listening to various ever increasingly expensive components and when I could not tell the difference that is when I stopped and bought. So you may have an idea of my (I think relatively poor- or a blessing as cheap!) hearing. So rather than set out with a budget I just want to buy when I cannot tell the difference anymore (hopefully not too expensive!)

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi

Worth trying some Monitor Audios as they should have the scale that you require to fill the room. Sevenoaks sell 'em so you should have no problems getting most of the range to demo.

From my experience I would say that going the floorstander route would be right for you and the space that you're trying to fill.

Good luck.

Cheers

I also have a large lounge(9mx5m with 4m high open ceilings)and also listen approx 90% of the time to classical and operatic music.
I feel no need to have floorstanding speakers,I can get nowhere near the limit of the kit I have now regarding volume or ability to fill the room with sound.
when I change my speakers it will be for more standmounts.

My combined living/dining room area is also about 8m x 4m with a ceiling 6m high in the living area, and my standmounted speakers are set up in the living room half and I have no problem getting a spacious soundstage.

With a room as large as yours, I wouldn't suggest that you place the speakers 6m apart and sit 6m from the speakers, unless you're planning on investing in a pair of Focal Grande Utopia EM or Wilson Audio Alexandria being driven by some hefty monoblocks. With your amplification and the speakers that would be an appropriate match for it, you won't be able to fill the room completely with sound even with a floorstander. Move the speakers closer together and your seating position closer to the speakers and you'll be doing yourself a favour, and opening up a lot more speaker options.

For scale and dynamism, with a good sound quality and plenty of muscle, I'd suggest you have a look at the current Hi Fi World Speaker of the Year, the Q Acoustics 1050i floorstander. £330 but widely available on a deal for less than £300.
