Speaker replacement - any suggestions?

Current system:

Marantz CD63 Mk 2 KI Signature, Arcam Alpha 8 and 8P, biamping Monitor Gold Reference 20s

I am being urged to upgrade my speakers to something more in keeping with our decor (sound familiar?!)

I want something sonically similar to and of equal to better quality than the Monitors, which I love. For me, I presume this really limits it to floorstanders, as I need deep bass, although I'd seriously consider some miraculous stand mounters if something existed!

Cosmetically, they would ideally be gloss white, although I think silver might just sneak past the aesthetics committee. These speakers will be in an all white room, either side of a big gloss white LCD TV on a gloss white cabinet!

Contemporary or futuristic design is not a problem (and might even be preferred by aesthetics committee).

Music style - mostly guitar/indie: Smiths/Morrissey, Gene, Suede, Interpol, Radiohead, etc

Budget "up to £2000" according to finance committee (same membership as aesthetics)

Could be tricky. The Arcam Alpha 8 + power amp is a very good combo, but I fear you may be overstretching yourself. If you're determined to spend in the region of 2K, try looking at Spendor A6, but unsure whether they do a gloss white.

Just to clarify, I don't NEED to spend £2k. The upper limit simply represents the aesthetics committee's desperation and/or determination to rid the house of a pair of "oak coffins" that are no longer in vogue!

A cheaper solution would be equally acceptable.

Thats a pair of good-as-new PL-100's for £850, an absolute bargain. I was going to suggest them anyway, but they normally retail at £2500.

Good call - however, I think they might not meet the committee's criteria. The OP did state something a little more idiosyncratic.

Wished I could agree that sort of dough from my fiancee alliance bank.
 
Mmmmm...... Something sonically similar or better than your GR20s..... High gloss white or silver.....

I'd be looking at the GS20s in high gloss silver!

That's why MonoPulse sprung to mind. They look different from conventional monitors, and when I heard the entry-level 32's a few years back they were stunning.

Sounds like you should be checking out the new MA RX range. Beautifully finished and good value from what I hear. Those PL100s are incredibly tempting though. Unfortunately I really don't think the 8/8p is going to do them justice (I used to own that pair too).

EDIT the Spendor A5s are good for the WAF too. They're tiny little floorstanders and sound huge!

I've never heard anything so ridiculous, you couldn't make it up. Tell her she's only allowed to wear gloss white clothes.

Or is this just a ruse, and she happened to mention, once, that the speakers could be more in keeping and you are using that as the basis of a serious upgrade.

I promised about 2 months ago that my upgrading bug had been sated, but have been looking for a new amp this week...
 
Check with Monitor Audio what the implications of having them resprayed are, then go out and get a better integrated or pre/power amp - I think that is the real limiting factor in this system.

You might get something from the Adam speaker range, or Elac, but expect to pay more for both.

Plan is to audition the Monopulses, MA RX 6s and 8s and GS 20s, and take it from there.

Also, in due course, upgrade/replace CD player (see my thread elsewhere!) and upgrade amps.
 
I would be interested to read what you think of the new silver Vs not as new gold.

I recently bought the RX6s and love them. Mine are clad in unfashionable oak coffin black, though given their modest dimensions, they would only be suitable for the final resting place for a chimney sweep
 
One other thought, Elac (German speaker firm) do some speakers in white, not your typical looks either from what I've seen in some cases. Maybe worth seeing what's going if you can find a dealer with some that tick all the boxes.
 
Check if you can listen to theese speakers:

- Audio Physic Yara Superior (floorstander in white)
- System Audio 1750 (floorstander in white)

Auditioned them a while ago when was looking for new speakers and also had the wife problem. They sound absolutely fabulous!!! Not sure both companies are popular in Britain but read recently some distrubutor announced System Audio to the maket in UK...
 
Zu Essence. Check out the reviews for these speakers. Come in a variety of colors or can be special ordered in different colors. I've probably read 10 reviews of these speakers and each reviewer is blown away by them. They're floortstanders and they say you can place them anywhere and they sound great. I believe the company tells you to 'just put them where they look best in your home'.

I was going to suggest GamuT Phi 5 but they're about £3600 so well over
budget. If you are willing to consider bookshelf speakers then there's
the GamuT Phi 3 at around £1600. Both come in gloss white. The
floorstanders certainly have a similar sort of sound to the MA's and
they look a bit different, they have that Scandinavian thing going on.
They do matching stands but not in white, either metallic black or metallic grey.
