I have just set up me Denon 1910 amp using audyssey and looking on the what hi-fi site saw the video about setting your speakers up and using a sound meter to get the level right. I have an app on my iphone called SPL meter so thought I would give it a go and here in lies my problems, the what hi-fi video said you want around 75dB I ran the sound test and was getting level of around 68dB and the setting on the amp were around -4,5bB to -7dB (depending on the speaker) and to get the 75dB I was having to go to +2dB which seemed a big discrepancey, the only one that was close was my PV1 sub. Am to conclude that the iphone is inaccurate or something else is amiss

You're making things way more difficult for yourself than they need to be. The Audyssey auto set-up works perfectly accurately if you take the time to read the instructions on how to do it before you do it. The microphone placement is especially important, and there's detailed advice on that (and anything else you may want to know about Audyssey) over on Audysseys' own web-site.
