As you will tell from my question I am a newbie here so please bear with me.

I have a Sumsung 6000 series LED TV and want something to run the audio side of things but would also like what I buy to also be capable of playing CDs/IPOD etc.

I was originally thinking of getting the Samsung surround sound 'box' that has Blu-ray player speakers etc...however I went to Richer Sounds on Sunday and they made me think twice and this is the current plan:

Buy the following:

Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray player
Cambridge Audio AM-10
Speakers maybe Cambridge S30s/S70s or Mission MX1 or Tannoy V1s

I also currently have a BT Vision Box.

I guess my question is what do people think of the above?

- Will the blu-ray give me decent sound quality for CDs?
- Is the AMP good enough and if not could you recommend something else but at a similar if not lower price level - as you will already appreciate this is a budget system!!
- Speaker wise do you think the bookshelves are the way to go? If so which would you recommend outright and bearing in mind the amp?

I don't have massive room for the surround sound anyway so the thinking here is to run it just through the two speakers giving good sound quality for the TV but also if we want to listen to music we can do that too.

Thanks a million in advance :)

Hi - thanks for the quick response!

Well my budget originally was the £280 for the Samsung setup but I have now resigned myself to spending around £450 though the missus is yet to be made aware of the uptick in costs :)

The DVD which gets really good reviews is £89 on Amazon

The Amp is £179

Speakers are about £130-150 depending

But then I obviously need HDMI/audio connectors

Have a look at this http://www.hifi4less.com/product.php/2493/yamaha-rxv-367-av-receiver-yamaha-ns-p285-5-1-speaker-system/b957a1867d0f4759321d27b501104ac6 I've never heard the set up but looks good to me, it comes with a sub cable and speaker wire and it will leave you some money for the BDP 370 and HDMI cables. Any body else have any views on this.

Thanks a lot. On that basis are you saying that you think I would be much better going for the full surround sound system rather than just the 2 stereo speakers?

Part of the reason I was thinking this is that I like in a 2bed apartment without lots of space and no real spot to put the rear speakers. Also do the smaller speakers still produce good quality sound would you say?

Do you think it is just a bad idea to just get the 2 speakers?

What about the ability to play CD's/iPod through the on the DVD player/straight through the Amp? Would that produce decent sound in these 2 setups that you suggested?

Many thanks for your time and advice...it is much appreciated

I had keffs 1005 and they did not sound that good 2ch but sounded quite good in 5.1. You could if you want good music and ok tv sound is but a good pair of speakers and a amp like the Denon. Try and have some demos and see which is best for you. If you post what area you come from someone might be able to recommend a good shop.

So scissors you suggested just getting the Denon mini system D38 with decent speakers but am I able to run the TV/BT Vision/blu-ray outputs through that? Im not sure if it has enough inputs but please let me know. Would they be analogue inputs or Digital ones? Thanks

Im now getting a bit confused as the best way to go tbh. Seperates/D38/2 Channel/5.1

Does anyone think that the Cam Audio Amp is any good or is it just not worth considering?

1I really appreciate all the advice but my gut feeling says the simpler the system for me the better really but want a good quality sound principally for the TV but also for sound.

If anyone else also has thoughts it would be appreciated.

Dirtyclean - which Denon amp did you think would be good.

Thanks

You seemed to be steering down the 2CH route due to space constraints and also wanting a good music source (the BDP will be no more than okay for CD's) .

I owned the Denon DM38DAB's predecessor the 37 which was a fantastic little hifi system and by all accounts this one is even better, plus you can hook up your ipod through the USB input. If you need digital inputs then neither this or the CA is going to be suitable (I assumed that you don't as you had put up the Topaz as an option).

I have no interest whatsoever in AV as I've always been more than thrilled playing movies etc through my hifi. If you are looking down the 2CH route then double check exactly what connections you need for your set-up. If you only need phono connections which was inferred by your choice of the Topaz, then I was simply putting the Denon forward for consideration. Good luck!

Thanks a lot and now I am going to show an even lower level of knowledge.

I basically want better sound quality from my TV (in addition to the music I listen to on iPod/CD)

So, I want to be able to send the sound from the TV signal to the amp/DenonDM38. Now, I believe I will have 3 inputs to this:
1. blu-ray player (which I will need to buy)
2. BT Vision Box with Sky Sports etc
3. Samsung 6000 series LED TV with build in HD Freeview

So am I right in thinking I need to connect all 3 of those to the amp/DM38?

Also, are they digital or Analogue signals?

Sorry for the increasingly basic questions but just wanting to make sure that what I buy is what I need.

Many thanks,

Richard

PS Yes I think I am leaning towards 2 Channel (in fact didnt know which forum to put this post in) but if someone feels that would be a big mistake please let me know.

It's hard to tell what you want... and I don't think you know... do you want a no fuss ready kit? If so buy a box kit like the first one you said. If you want abit better sound then you will have to spend your 450 pounds on speakers and a Av amp, but for this money you will not get the music sound I think you desire. I went shopping for my first kit with a budget of 450 but spent 800 on my Kef 1005 and a Sony Av, then after 8 months upgraded it all as I was not happy with it. I jumped straight in with out doing a demo, also not a lot of people on here from what I've seen, have one box kits or sound bars so your unlikely to get a answer if these are any good. Like I said try and go and have a listen to a kit that costs 450 and see if your happy with it, take some of your cds with you.

Hi there,

Firstly - I guess you were right - I didnt really know what I wanted but in the end went for the Denon Mini with Tannoy V1 Speakers and the Sony Blu Ray player - which is great except I dont have analogue outs that seem to work from the BT vision box (they dont support even through they are on there and there is a very slight delay on the feed) and the TV doesnt have any only digital outs!!!

So, the bottom line is that I need to sync the sound and picture. Picture is going through HDMI cable and Sound through the RL Channel for Stereo. Is there anything you can suggest to help here???

So how do I go from here. Only wanting the 2 channels (not 5.1) but wanting to be able to put a digital optical signal in I think OR is there another way I can do it?

I have looked at DACs which are pretty expensive and I am hoping I dont really need to spend all that extra having just shelled out for all the above.

Assistance much appreciated.

Thanks!! PS Im hoping there is a simple solution!!
