Very shortly, I believe - Simon Lucas, our First Tests editor, was going through a list of test models with Sony yesterday... Sorry I can't be more specific: team on way to Bristol to build our Show stand. Will get back to you when have more details.

I was about to buy the 46W4500 from a Sony Centre yesterday until the shop assistant mentioned the replacement 46W5500 is shortly due out.

Looking through the spec of the new model on the Sony site (http://www.sony.co.uk/product/t46-w-series/kdl-46w5500), I noticed that it has an 8-bit panel, whereas the 4500 has a 10-bit panel. Isn't this a step in the wrong direction??

Would have thought nothing Sony would do with a new model would be a step in the wrong direction but look forward to the review teams views.

I would imagine a pretty big focus of the review would be to look at the often reported clouding issues on the W4500 which hopefully have been removed on this new model.

I wanted to go for the W4500 but rightly or wrongly held off due to the clouding issues reported.

Look forward with others to hearing first reports on the W5500 series asap.

BTW I am looking at the 46W5500

Cheers

Also nice to see that the 5500 uses about 50% the electricity!!!
The 40" only uses 130W :)
Am also holding off to see what WHifi have to say, but shame it isnt much of a looker :-(

i'd be very interested to see what sort of review this tv gets as i currently have a z4500 on order but if this tv gets a high review i might be tempted by this instead.....

Also, i see people are saying about it having an 8-bit panel instead of a 10bit panel............what exactly does that mean and how could it affect the picture?

im pretty sure that there are still no 10 bit signals that can be shown on a 10 bit panel so it shouldnt make any difference at the moment if you have an 8 bit or 10 bit panel, although some say that feeding an 8 bit signal through a 10 bit panel causes more processing which can slightly alter performance i.e. picture quality but not a significant amount that i could notice.

Hope this helps

I noticed this elsewhere which seems to back up the previous comments

'more than ever this question is popping up. The simple answer is as of now it makes little to no difference if you have a 10 bit or 8 bit lcd. The reason is because there is no 10 bit source out there to feed this 10 bit panel, and when u send 8 bit to a 10 bit tv the tv has to do more processing which everyone knows more thinking done by the tv means a lower quality picture. With blu-ray now being the last form of mechanical source other then gaming there will be no source out there in the future either, the next generation of movies and such will be internet based and downloadable content, with compression rates of 13-1 and getting bigger online there is no need for 10 bit and satelite and cable company's have said they will not increase there bandwith wich means they cannot fit a 10 bit signal. You may also notice the biggest player in lcd Samsung has gone with an 8 bit panel in all of their new tvs and i can tell you i have seen a 8 bit samsung next to a 10 bit sony xbr on a panel comparison using an HQV disc and there is no real difference samsungs processing makes up the difference in colour recreation. So dont get caught up in the numbers game just see if you like the picture'

I heard that even though there is no 10-bit source material available (other than some camcorders) it still has an effect when changing the colour settings on a TV. For example, turning up the intensity of colour on a signal gives you a greater colour range in 10 bit than you would in 8-bit colour. So it seems that the advantage is more in the way a TV source can be processed when it reaches the box than in representing the exact signal that was fed in.

ÿI suppose it's a bit like a graphic equalizer. They actually distort sound but in a way that pleases our ears. They create sound that is not accurate compared with the source, yet most of us like the fact that we can "enhance" sound quality beyond the source signal. Should we not expect that from the latest TV's? ÿ

Not sure how true this is, but thats what I heard...

Who is telling you 7 days? Sony's dealer site has a planned delivery date of 14th April.

We received a KDL40-W5500 today, and it will certainly be a First Test in the May issue (on sale April 8th). It's my understanding that the screen won't be in the shops until the second week of April.

Hi Simon,

I have pre ordered the W5500 in advance and shipments are showing around 16-23rd of March.

Without revealing too much before your review in the May edition can you at least give us your initial thoughts when compared with the W4500.

Hi there folks

The good news, as you know, is that we now have the new Sony KDL-40W5500 in our test rooms for review. I've discussed it with my learned colleagues this morning, and as it's the key product on the cover of our May 2009 issue (on sale April 8th), I'm afraid you'll have to wait until the magazine comes out before reading the review.

However, we will be posting our review of the new Samsung UE40B7020 model (£1500) online before the mag is published.
