We've got two bought new about 7 months ago. Had a few disc stalls early on both nothing recently. No complaints at all about these units, especially since I got them each for about a third of the price of the Oppo offerings.

The oppo to the Sony in richer sounds and the Sony seemed quieter but it's hard to tell in the shop.

Certainly no difference in picture quality.

In fact I've seen YouTube video showing the 900 model Panasonic showing better picture also than the oppo.

The richer sounds salesmen was trying to convince me to go for opportunities but he didn't know why.

If say spending a fair amount like a new benchmark dac or amp
Maybe better to get cheap tickets to America and buy it and stick it into luggage

35% import duty plus 20% VAT when you arrive at Gatwickshire. 120 volts 60 Hz power to contend with.
Added to which the mainstream stuff is all much the same, the cheap American stuff (if you can find any) really isn't that good, and the good stuff gets REALLY expensive REALLY quickly.

The reason the Sonys were so cheap is because they were selling the cheaper Samsungs by the container load and the Sonys were just taking up shelf space.

If it's in your suitcase.
Was thinking of something small like benchmark dac etc

Just like the good old days trying to sneak in an extra bottle of Bacardi and 200 B&H. Your suitcase your risk. ;-)

If you do bring something back I would suggest either making sure its dual voltage or uses a USB or other external power supply you can swap for one from Fleabay.

I tried converting a UK model turntable (Pro-Ject) to run in the US and it didn't like the 50 Hz / 60 Hz switch at all.

We earn a salary and pay a tax on it. So why be taxed a second time , because of what we choose to do with what was left after paying the tax.

Govts need more money, and they seem hell bent on extracting that from anything not deemed a absolute necessity for sustenance. And hifi is in the same bracket as alcohol and tobacco in India.

And let's talk about double taxation. An Indian guy working in UK or USA will not be taxed in India, since he has already paid his taxes there. So why pay tax when we import something hifi into our country, when we have already paid the resident taxes in that country on purchase for that hifi.

When you purchase something from abroad you do not pay any tax on it, the tax is added when it arrives in the country. (And is whatever the tax rate is in the receiving country)

In the USA all prices are shown without tax (Hence it costs more at the till then what is on the sticker price) as the tax rate varies between states.

8.25% sales tax in Texas.

Beats the snot out of the UK's 20% VAT :)
