I've just bought this amp and connected my SKY HD(sat hdmi port), PS3( bd hdmi port), APPLE TV(dvd hdmi) to HDMI in ports and then via HDMI out port to the Sony TV. Sky picture and sound ok but PS3 has picture no sound, APPLE TV doesn't seems to be working at all (no sound or picture).

Have I connect these things correctly? Thank you very much.

Couple of points: assume you're also running a digital audio cable from the Sky HD to the receiver, as the Sky HDMI output only carries stereo, not 5.1 surround.

And I think the rest of the problem is mainly due to input assignment - you need to go into the set-up and check that each of the inputs - for the BD and the Apple TV - is set to take sound and video from the HDMI.

You also need to check that the Blu-ray player is set to output 'bitstream' audio, and that the Sony is set to auto decoding.

The no picture/sound from the ATV is slightly more of a conundrum: it could be an HDCP clash between the receiver and the Apple box, HDCP being the copyright control handshaking in place to prevent piracy. Try connecting the ATV direct to your TV and see whether you get sound and picture, and make sure any HDMI control - such as Bravia Sync - is turned off on TV and receiver.

If this doesn't clear it, you may find you have to connect the ATV direct to the TV, and its optical digital out to the Sony.

Hi Andrew, Many thanks for your reply and I was able to solve all the issues above with your advice. Really appreciate it.

Yes, I am running the SKY HD with an optical cable but still no DD the amp displays PL only. I have tried various movies on SKY last night which had the DD sign on them but no luck, is this a SKY sound issue?

Turned off the HDMI on( what does it do anyway , just curious to know???) to off on the amp and now the sound/picture are fine on ATV.

Couple of other things, if you don't mind!

When I turned the amp on it always displays LINEAR PCM[48] what/ why is that?

Since everything are now connected via HDMI in to the amp and then out to the TV the amp has to be on to watch a quick burst of TV before go to work.Without rattling the place up and waking up the neighbours, is there a way around this just to hear it through the TV?

Thanks very much.

you can run the hdmi which currently connects your 2400 to Sky to go straight to your tv from Sky. You will then need to assign the optical from Sky to the hdmi input in your tv. You will then get sound from the tv without the amp being on.

As for 5.1 with Sky. Go in to the sound settings on Sky and make sure digital is checked rather than stereo.

On the Sky problem, you need to make sure the audio settings on the Sky box are outputting DD where available: it's under settings, audio, digital output.

Re the Linear thing, you may have the decode priority set to Linear - it needs to be set Auto. See Sony manual p56

The audio pass-through problem is common to most receivers - the signal only goes through the receiver when it's switched on. There's no way round this beyond connecting everything direct to the TV via HDMI - interestingly, the new Sony receivers just announced in the States have standby HDMI passthrough to get round just this problem

As well as the other suggestions, if you're only watching a bit of TV before work and they are Freeview channels, you could use the TV's internal Freeview tuner to watch standard TV and therefore wouldn't need the amp. This would then negate the need for re-wiring.

Sorry for hijacking the post slightly.

Just looked on a certain site in the States about this and one of the models (Sony STR-DN1010) is due for release here later in the year (according to WHFSVs blog on UK releases).

So Andrew, do you think this facility will be on the UK/EU version of Sony amps as its something I am looking for?

Or do they tend to alter specs for different geographical areas.

Assuming the amps launched here are HDMI 1.4 capable, the Audio Return Channel is part of the specification, and I see no reason why Sony should change that part of the specification for Europe. After all, other manufacturers are planning models with similar facilities.

I had a similar problem to samsung re. connecting my ps3 via that same hdmi port. After checking all the settings (and trying all combinations!) and reading other posts on this issue I concluded that the port was faulty (when I connected the ps3 via other ports it worked perfectly). Given that the warranty had run out a couple of months before, I was v. grumpy.... however I found an answer:

The manual of the 2400es says that you need to reset it before you first start using it (or something like that anyway - can't quite remember - it was a little while ago) - there's an odd combination of buttons to press to do this - see the manual. I did it and hey presto the port started working perfectly........

I see that samsung has sorted the problem, but hope this helps others - I read that a number of 2400es's have gone back to the manufacturer for this issue - possibly unnecessarily..?

Hi All, Many thanks for your responses and especially to Porf for pointing out the obvious: turning the Freeview on to watch a bit of TV in the morning!

BUT, I still do have an issue with not being able to get the TureHD sound from my The Dark Knight and Spider-man 3 BDs they just play DD. The DK doesn't seems have a sound setting and even if I turn the English TrueHD on Spider-man 3 it still plays the DD. I have set the HDMI to Automatic in Sound Setting on PS3. Can anyone give any advice on this please?

Thanks very much.

Have you disabled secondary audio? Some BD players require that you do so before you'll hear the full-resolution mix.
