sony str1200es receiver

Can someone tell me if i need a phono amp for the above receiver,as i am not getting any sound out of it.i have contacted the shop i purchased it from but they could not tell me either way.thanks.

Hi there,

Are you just using HDMI connectors? I have seen from other posts on this forum that the Sony does not accept digital sound input via HDMI- so it is necessary to connect your sources via the optical or coaxial digital inputs on the receiver.

Do you mean a phono preamp to use a turntable? If so, no you don't unless you're using a low-output moving coil cartridge - the Sony has a built-in phono stage, but it's only for moving magnet phono cartridges.

If not, can you clarify a little...?

Oh, and name and shame the shop that couldn't even give you this simple piece of information, please.

thanks for that,everything is now sorted and i am now enjoying listening to my old albums.The shop in question was Richer Sounds,Bristol.
