Hi - received my 2400ES last week and fairly impressed with it. Have it connected - as I'm sure many do - to a PS3. Therefore PS3 is doing decoding and outputting LPCM. Hence I dont get format descriptions on the display which is not a problem as the PS3 tells me using "display" what the sound format is.

Now what I don't understand at all is on the Amp - what is the difference between AFD, E Surround and CSTEX A etc. Furthermore on the GUI there are all these subformats like Neo6 etc...?

So my question is if I'm playing a Blu Ray of say Casino Royale which setting do I want the amp on ? AFD ? E Surround ? And these Neo etc formats where do they fit in? I find the manual very confusing and hard to understand. I Just want to hear each disc in the best possible format. Many thanks

Use AFD. This is auto. So the receiver selects what's best. On Sky HD film channels it will go straight to Dolby 5.1. The news would be left and right speakers only (as it was broadcast that way). E Surround means that the receiver outputs the sound to all speakers evenly. The default is Pro Logic. Neo 6 and the others are alternatives to Pro Logic.

Many thanks - when are you supposed to use E Surround ? Is it for giving a pseudo surround sound from only 2 channel analogue inputs ? Or does it indeed add a different soundscape to even DTS MA or even just DD5.1 etc? Can I have Neo 6 processing on top of DTS MA ?

Basically I only watch Blu Ray discs (and DVDs) from the PS3 via HDMI and DVDs from a DVD player via coaxial so I've just been using AFD for safety

The former. When I'm made to watch 'stenders, using the E Surround you pick up things like the bass from a stereo in the market that you don't get using 2 channel.

You will only ever need to have it switched to AFD my friend (just read the rest of your post). And no Neo 6 will not add anything to the HD codecs or Dolby Digital/DTS.

What speakers do you have? I would expect you to be impressed with the sound.

Many thanks again - so far your information has been more useful than the manual - perhaps the worst written or badly translated manual I have had the misfortune to have to try and understand. Badly printed too.

Speaker wise - perhaps not the best - some old Mission 782 floorstanders as fronts (with one sounding completely different to the other after a tweeter was replaced), a B&W Centre speaker, some Mission 77DS for rears and a far too expensive REL Q201E subwoofer bought in a moment of madness a few years ago (it alone was £700 - I'd never consider spending that on one speaker these days). Ideally I'm going to replace the lot when funds become available - KEF eggs I thought as they seem small and neat - I imagine I'd be downgrading hugely in subwoofer terms though. Then again perhaps just some smallish B&Ws and keep the REL. I'd really like to go 7.1 now as well as the amp supports it. In summary though my system still sounds better than probably 99% of homes - but clearly in AV enthusiasts terms needs work.

If anyone has any tips for getting the best from the 2400 please let me know - I'm very pleased with it - esp for £369 - a bargain surely.

An unbelievable bargain! Your speakers are definitely holding it back. Kef eggs or B&W sats with your sub would change your world mate. If your fronts are not balanced, your centre speaker different make and model and your rears different again, you could have the best receiver in the world and you wouldn't hear it.

Good luck. Your system is never going to sound as bad as it does now, and you are quite happy with it. That's not a bad position to be in!
