No rear projections now. Personally I was never a fan. Too sensitive to ambient light and expensive when the bulbs fail. LCDs provide much better performance.

Size wise, there is a 70" version of the X4500 but at a suggested retail of nearly £30,000 I think its perhaps slightly on the expensive side compared to the Pioneer. The 55X4500 might be worth a look though??

Hi mgillespie, sadly matthewpiano is right, the Sony rear-pro sets are no more in the UK. I do disagree with him on some other points though

Too sensitive to ambient light

Maybe in the bad old days, but definitely not true of the sets in question, which would be the SXRD range. Ambient light is no real problem.

and expensive when the bulbs fail.

Agreed, but cheap overall when you compare equivalent LCD prices. The 70" RP was being sold for just over 3k, with a spare lamp included, which would do you for 3 years or so. Leaving a lot of change for lamps compared to a 70" LCD!

LCDs provide much better performance.

All a matter of personal preference to which technology you prefer, I guess. But "much better"? Noooo

I have the 55", and the only LCD I'd consider changing to would be that X4500, but I can't afford it!

So, all that said, I still think it's worth keeping an eye out for second hand SXRD sets as they do pop up from time to time. However, if you have room for that 70" RP monster, you surely must have room for a front projection system? That's the way I'd go.
