My wife has a slight hearing defect so we have a pair of unpowered, surround sound speakers wired under the floor to near the sofa, from the surround sound output ports on our old CRT Philips tv.
That tv is on the blink now and I have spent weeks selecting a replacement, I have decided on a Sony 37EX503 but not bought it yet.
Today I discover that there are no analogue audio outputs on the 37EX503, nor on the runner up the Panasonic 37D25, and I’m guessing probably none on any HD LCD tvs.
So, how can I connect to speaker(s) by the sofa for my wife ? I would like to keep it simple so that she just switches on the tv and the external speakers work but I appreciate I may be clutching at straws. I definitely do not want a home theatre system with subwoofer and an array of other smaller speakers.
I have had the following thoughts:
1) Use the optical audio output into my HiFI (Denon DM38) and put the HIFI speakers across the room, or connect my surround speakers to the AV aux outputs.
2) Connect a Scart/AV ouput connector to the new tv, then wire from there to my surround sound speakers – is this possible and will it work ? Does such a connector exist and will the output drive my unpowered surround sound speakers ?
3) Buy a “gizmo” that plugs into the headphone jack on the new tv that drives external speakers (I think some of these might come with wireless speakers).
4) Connect to the headphone jack and try and split the wiring out to connect to the surround sound speakers – will it be strong enough to drive them ?
All ideas welcome, ...I'm keen to get the new tv
