Hi

I do not have a descent hifi set up as yet, just upgraded my all in one for home cinema system, Yamaha 765/kef 2005.3

My next step is to have a nice hifi set up, My question is do i need one if i get sonos and download my cd collection to my computer or is a DAC required?, What powers/amplifies the music, Or am i completely on the wrong track,

Please any help as i do enjoy music

Thanks

timberman

Sonos has two types of reciever a passive and active type (think its the ZP90 and ZP120 couldbe wrong though).

The active one just needs speakers connecting, whilst the passive one has traditional line outs and connects to an amplifier / speaker set up

Asfor the "transmission" side of things you can either connect a zone bridge to your wired network in your house or one of the above zone players if you require music in that room also. They both set up their own wireless network to "talk" to other players in the house.

The computer or NAS drive must also be connected to your home network for the sonos system to access your music.

Ok ta,

Would sound be coming from its own speakers or can it be set up through a hifi speakers.

I live in a old cottage of thick walls would this be ok ?

Again sorry for asking what may be silly questions

With both the players ZP90 and ZP120 you would need to have speakers. The ZP90 (passive) could be connected to your AV Reciever so you could listen to music there (CD in on Reciever) and you could have ZP120's (add later) in each bedroom for example these would need their own seperate sets of speakersfor each room.

As has been said, the ZP90 would plug into your amp, which has its own speakers connected of course, you'd need to add speakers to a ZP120. Sonos do make their own speakers but they're an additional cost and you can get better elsewhere.

You'll probably struggle to be honest, I have real problems with mine for exactly the same reasons, you'll either need Zonebridges all over the place or you might need to wire them in. Each ZP has two ethernet connections, you can daisy-chain the players together, as well as plugging in other networked devices if you wish.

Having said that you'll struggle whatever wireless solution you go for, my router can't be detected at the other end of our house, so it's not a Sonos specific issue.

Mind you if you're going upstairs through the floor you might get away with it, wooden floors don't block the signal in anything like the same way as old stone walls do.

Not at all, entirely sensible.

OK Cheers

My router is in one window to access across side garden to lounge window to pick up a signal for end rooms, My main use will be internal upstairs/downstairs, Best i go and have a look at local hifi shop,

Would you have a sonos over a hifi?

Or just as an extra for the multi room function?

Is the router in the same room as the amp is? The first ZP in the chain MUST be wired into the router, unless you get a Zonebridge and wire that in instead.

It's not really an either or question to be honest, I have my ZP90 plugged into my amp, via the optical out, that's my main music listening source. I don't even own a CD player. My ZP120 currently runs a pair of outdoor speakers for the garden. I expect I'll be getting another one and a pair of Dali Lektor 1's or KEF iQ10s for my pool (table) room, I will need a Zonebridge as well though to make that work, there's no line of sight between the pool room and the rest of the house unfortunately.

Or just as an extra for the multi room function?

Both really. The main point of Sonos is the multi-room capability but, in my opinion, a ZP90 can take the place of a CD player quite easily.

No my router is not near amp.

Zonebridge would probably go across tho as there is line of sight, if not will an ethernet cable do the job?

Sounds as though you are well happy with no cd player as i would be if all works out as well as seems.

Watch this space, Defo look at it seriously soon,

Yes, although if you're plugging a zonebridge into the router and then running a cable to the ZP90 by the amp you might as well not buy the Zonebridge, just run cable from the router straight to the ZP90. Unless of course you need the zonebridge to provide network coverage to your other ZP. There's nothing to stop you plugging both ZP and ZB directly into your router incidentally, assuming the router has enough ports.

Yeah, I can't think of any reason why I'd need a CD player now really.

Many thanks for your help

NP.
