For around the last 6 years or so we have had an old mini system hidden away in the corner of our lounge and only really being played when we had friends round. We are currently due to move house and although sadly the budget is going to be very tight we decided it was time for an upgrade of some sort. Having recently spent out on a full HD TV I would also like to replace my cheap and cheerful DVD player.

I really want one or a maximum of two separates in total that would take care of my movies and music, i have narrowed my search down to the items listed below and hopefully you could suggest the way foward.

Marantz Dv6001 paired with the Onkyo TX-SR505, would like the Onkyo TX-SR605 but not sure if my budget will stretch that far and maybe even overkill for me?

Denon 1940 paired with the Onkyo TX-SR505 or even the Sony STR-DA1200ES, I know I can get hold this amp for a good price on EBay …

Have also looked at the Marantz DV7001, looks great but would really stretch my budget and I would have no money left for the amp?

Also considered the PIONEER - DVLX50 but as above would not be able to buy the amp for 6 months or so.

Open to any suggestions you may have with my small budget.

Nearly forgot to mention my speakers are Q Acoustics1030

Cheers ....

The Marantz 6001 and Denon 1940 are both excellent DVD players, although the Marantz is the more musical of the two which might sway you if you intend to use it for CD replay as well as DVD duties.

No argument with the Onkyo TX-SR505 - I'd definitely go for that over the Sony. The point about the TX-SR605 is that it can handle the HD audio formats you get with Blu-ray (which the 505 can't), so if you intend to add a Blu-ray player to your system in the future, it's worth considering the 605 so you're futureproofed.

If you want to keep your budget strictly under control, then I think one of the budget players and Onkyo receivers will serve you well with the Q Acoustics.

Many thanks for the quick response Andy, glad to know i am on the right track, i only wish i had a higher budget, alas though so much to pay out for when one moves !

Its looking like the 6001 with the SR505 or 605, just need to find a supplier ! why is it so darn hard to buy Marantz equipment?

PS Great mag, spent many hours reading it over the past few months ...
