After being really into my Hifi since the age of 16, now 39 (god gettin old lol) i thought i had arrived at my perfect HiFi which comprised of a NAD SILVERLINE PRE/POWER AMP, MUSICAL FIDELITY XRAY V3 CDPLAYER, MUSICAL FIDELITY ELECTRA TUNER, CASTLE HARLECH 2 SPEAKERS, RUSS ANDREWS SILENCERBLOCK, SILVER SPIRAL INTERCONNECTS AND XTCSPEAKER CABLE.

I loved this system and it gave me many years of pleasure, but due to moving i sold the compleate system, due to it being to powerful for my new listening room, i was about to start looking for a new system when one night late on ebay i bought a Marantz 6010 ki signature amp in A1 condition, so over the next week i managed to buy a Marantz CD67-SE Special Edition CD Player and KEF Q35 Q SERIES speakers and added some Chord carnival speaker cable , the whole system cost me £320.00 and wow i am blown away so much musicallty.

After spending so much money in the past on HiFi equipment i am now doubting my sanity as this system seems to draw me into the music like no other HiFi i have owned and was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this ?

You have shown how valuable ebay is to getting super hifi for not a huge outlay and how diminishing returns sets in very quickly with hifi. You are also right to match your setup to your room. Room acoustics are ignored too much

A very wise decision on your part and I am very glad you are pleased with the results.

Room accoustics where the decideing factor, after half an hour listening to the previous setup, i had to turn it off, no matter what volume i listend at it just made my head bang, but not the way i useally headbang lol

I listen to Black and Death Metal, i know not the useual audiophile music but a good hifi is important for all genres and i was worried that 50 watts would not be enough power, but its all the power i need and i have a system that looks and sounds like new all for less than i spent on a mains block.... that really brings a smile to my face, and has left a big pot of money for new cds.

You are indeed correct, ebay is ideal to buy quality hifi at a good price as long as you do your research and dont get carried away with bidding..

There are loads of metal and all of its various genres who are audiophiles. This forum and Big Chris caused me to listen to and appreciate metal far more than I thought I would.

Metal needs detail and attack, a hard combination to achieve.

I had exactly the same speakers and amp combo, and mostly listen to metal and thought it was an amazing setup. I unfortunately sold it to get a home cinema system as I never got chance to listen to it (I only really listen to music through headphones now, death metal doesn't go down too well with the better half!)

When I get a bigger house I will find myself a listening room again and get on ebay (I can hear her now 'why do you need more speakers....')

Castle speakers and NAD equipment doesn't sound bright or hard in general from my experience (maybe some specific models might, i don't know).

Do you think you had the right equipment but was your previous room an acoustic nightmare? Do you think your current Marantz/KEF combo won't sound harsh in your previous listening room, or would it? Acoustics are very important, i tried my setup in 3 different rooms, and ohboy does it make a huge difference. But you also might like the sound more of a Marantz/Kef combo.

Congratulations at achieving your goal in such a way as you did.
