Small Room Speaker Choice

Hello All,

I am totally new to the HiFi World. I will place the equipment in a 3.5m long and 4m wide room. That is a relatively small space of 14 sm.

In the room I have a 1.5 meter long and 0.5 high long HiFi furniture. Next to which I plan to place the speakers. First I was considering stand mounted speakers but I realize that with stands it will take away the same space as some smaller floor standers. I narrowed down my Amp & CD player choice down to the Creek Evo 50. Good reviews and retailer recommendation, as honestly I could not really here major difference to the Rega Brio or Arcam A19 ensembles.

No I have to narrow down the speaker choice. I am quite tempted to go with floor standers. the issue is that I would like to place them around 20cm-30cm from the rear wall and around 150-180cm from each other next to a 150cm*50cm*50cm Hifi furniture.

Furthermore the door to the room will be parallel to the speakers. This means that entering the room the speakers are pretty much the first thing visible. So I have to leave room between door and speaker.

I was reading that the Rega S3 where built with small rooms in mind. I also like the idea of their side mounted bass speaker. However, my furniture is 50 cm tall, so if I place the speakers with the bass opening inwards I suppose it will interfere with the furniture? The speaker is only 80cm high...would that be a problem? So will I be forced to place them facing outside?

What could be nice alternatives (same price region) to the RS3? They should be matching well with the creek and working well in that small space.

Music: 60's, 70's Rock, Hard Rock, Alternative Rock, and quite some classic (Symphonic works)

Budget around 1000 Euros

Thanks for some advises!

You're quite right, in terms of floorspace, floorstanders don't take up any/much more room than the base of a standmounted speaker. BUT (you could probably see that word coming), controlling/taming the bass they produce in a small room is not easy, particularly with the space constraints you mentioned.

I have pretty titchy floorstanders as they go, but even in my new place which has a much larger listening room with plenty of breathing room from the walls, I'm struggling to keep the bass in check, and that's with all the control of an AV receiver / sub crossover at my disposal.

At your budget I'd seriously consider the terrific Neat Iotas. They sound superb, are easy to place and won't overwhelm the frequency range with bass. They're very easy on the eye too. One of my favourite speakers regardless of size or price. It'd be good to test them with the Creek though, just to make sure the sound signatures complement one another.

I have he same room size and use Spendor A3 which are only 75 cms high. Lovely speakers, worth a listen, often come up ex dem or second hand.

hey

don't exclude standmounts, they might be more adequate for your room. As others have said, it's not all about the footprint (although I, for one, do use floorstanders in a similarly sized room). I think Creek are partnered with Epos, so those should be on your shortlist as a given. Also, give B&W, Neat, ATC and also Spendor A3 and Martin Logan motion 20 if you can find a good deal on a pair, i know they're a bit out of your price range.

Focal 714 could be an option. They don't take much space, the bass is not overwhelming and you should find them at a discount price.

Standmount or floorstander, if the port/bass tuning frequency/s coincide with one of your major room modes, you have a problem.

Bungs help but ultimately you'd have to try in your room. Guessing will get you nowhere unfortunately.
