Was thinking of moving from Virgin to Sky for HD.  Does anyone know if you can keep virgin broadband & phone and just swap the tv service from Virgin to Sky?

From their terms:

"Your Sky box(es) must be connected to a fixed telephone line for 12 months"

No mention of BT. Seems this requirement was removed some time ago, my apologies. But how your broadband would work (particularly if you have it through the Virgin STB), I don't know.......

only has to be a bt line, if you take up the skytalk/broadband packages with your sky subcription, but your right john, they did use to state it had to a"bt line," then changed it to "fixed landline"

Thanks for that,

ÿ

Like the Virgin Broadband and phone service but with only one hd channel to speak about, would'nt mind sky for hd. ÿ

ÿ

Heard so many horror stories about sky broadband / customer care services maybe better just sticking with Virgin for now. ÿThough Virgin wont tell you if there is any HD channels planned for the future.ÿ

as for changing from virgin to sky, as john says it depends how your b/b is set up, plus i'm guessing that youv'e got one of there package deals for havin all three at a reduced price, guessing that if you cancel one of those services your end up having to pay full price for the phone and broadband, so'll end up getting stung, also depends on how long the contract was when you signed up,

I switched my TV service to sky, about 2 months ago. I kept the broadband and phoneline with Virgin

You DO NOT need to keep the Sky box connected to a phone line, provided you pay a fee - £25 from memory.

The installer connected the box to my Virgin phoneline when setting up the box, then left the lead with me.

If I want to buy a movie, I just plug the lead in.

Sounds a hassle, but I spent ages channeling the cable and AV speaker leads into the walls/floor, so I didn't want to ruin it with a phone line trailing around the room.

Oh and by the way - I am very happy with my new TV service in glorious HD

If i'm not being too cheeky, how much are you paying all in then for the phone, b/b, & tv with the Virgin & Sky bills combined?

I have the basic Virgin "M" broadband and find it fast enough for my needs, plus the phone package has the answering machine service and cheap international calls (in-laws live in Oz) - I pay £22 per month for that, from memory

For Sky, all the entertainment mixes, plus Sky Sports and HD mix - £50

The Sky HD+ box was on offer - £75 for the box, £30 for the install, £25 not to connect permanently to a phone line.

So thats one-off payment of £130 (some of which I will recoup by selling my HD recorder), and £72 for all services

It costs a little more than sticking to Virgin, but I am extremely pleased with the result. I had the standard Virgin box, not the V+, so I now have easy recording facilities and HD as well for my extra dosh.

I haven't bothered looking for more of a discount, I believe there is a good offer on at the moment for Sky broadband.

After spending circa 2k on a plasma panel and new AV amp, I thought it was crazy not to spend a little extra and provide them with a good HD source.

...and if I ever get strapped for cash I can use the dish for freesat instead, by which time they should have a decent amount of HD channels on show

Thanks for the info, just off the phone to Sky. ÿCan keep my Virgin & b/b & phone, but have now switched to Sky for tv.

£75 installation and £28 a month for 27 HD channels (variety & kids mix) and another 7 HD channels being released this month! ÿWas no hassle when i spoke to Virgin. I just told them i wanted more HD channels and they seemed to agree with me.ÿ

No point in having and HD tv and only having one channel I thought!

ÿ

Cheers!ÿ

Hi,

SKH HD doesn't have 27 HD channels...only 19 available according to the EPG. Two of them are Sky Box Office and some only available depending on your subscription. If you don't subscribe to movies, you don't get HD movie channels for example.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.
