hi
so, should i get one or not? i'm a footie fan and can't wait for next week's world cup. i already rung Sky because we live in a flat and they said it's fine they can do something for me, etc. i was planning on buying a Freeview HD recorder but frustration sets in because of a. expensive boxes (ranging from £250 to £350) and b. availability (but more like scarcity) of the boxes even if the football is nearing. all info i am getting are from known tech and gadget websites.
so, should i get one? or wait till end june before those boxes start coming? the Philips one has not so good reviews, the Humax and the 3view are all "delayed" and doen't come till july i heard, the Toshiba one is "this june" but so far no info on their website and no news when will they relase it and i don't know if the Sharp, Sagemcom or Digital stream are worth the "risk". the Sky+ HD offer seems really good with free install/box/setup and a £28 monthly. my only niggles/concerns/queries with this box is a. 125GB only of hard disk which is not a lot, b. can one transfer files onto a USB hard disk drive? ( i heard it has a USB port at the rear but not sure what's it's purpose) and c. what format are the saved files. also i would like to ask and know if presuming the USB port is "active" can i insert a USB device to play files like MP3 or Divx or Jpeg files. would you happen to know? please help me. should i take Sky+ HD now or wait...? thanks. i have only until this evening to decide so i can still catch the first few games of the footie.

hi Gino_76ph,

I am getting sky installed today but i'm 90% sure in saying that the Hard drive that is used in the Sky+HD box is just a standard 3.5" hard drive same as you would find in a computer. So if space is a problem then i doubt there is any reason why you couldn't swap out the existing one and replace it with a bigger one.

Also as i Know a bit about V+ box's they have ports where you can attach an external hard drive over and move over the content and i'm sure Sky will work the same way.

As for freeview the problem i encountered with this (helped my uncle get one as he wanted it) you don't get an EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) so you can't tell whats coming on next or search extensively like you can with V+ and Sky

Hope this helps.

Yes you can, as soon as the engineer has left although you might have a problem getting sky to fix it if it subsequently goes wrong. Most people wait until after the initial 12 months has elapsed before they do it.

No, actually, you can't. The USB port isn't active on Sky boxes and even if it was you still wouldn't be able to do this.

Err, yes you can, Freeview carries a full EPG!

Have you considered Freesat as an alternative? the Sky+ HD offer seems really good with free install/box/setup and a £28 monthly. my only niggles/concerns/queries with this box is a. 125GB only of hard disk which is not a lot,It's actually 160GB on a standard HD box. b. can one transfer files onto a USB hard disk drive? ( i heard it has a USB port at the rear but not sure what's it's purpose)No you can't,the USB port is disabled/for factory use c. what format are the saved files.Sky boxes use a file system, known as XTVFS. also i would like to ask and know if presuming the USB port is "active" can i insert a USB device to play files like MP3 or Divx or Jpeg filesIt isn't active,so no...And Sky being Sky even if it was our doubt they'd support playback of other files!
