I have a sony strdh810 av reciever with a sky HD box. I have the HDMI and optical lead running from the HD box to the reciever.

1. Is this the correct set up to get the DD5.1???

2. How do i know if the sound is being carried down the optical cable and not the HDMI???

My reciever is giving me no sign im recieving DD5.1 when in AUTO MODE.

Sky HDMI is configured Stereo only and your receiver no doubt will receive HDMI input as priority hence no 5.1 so, best way is;

Sky HDMI to your tv, optical to your receiver, job done.

OP- technically the coaxial is considered the better delivery system, but I honestly can't hear any difference on my box.

M- you need to ensure the optical input you have plugged your lead into has been assigned the input you are selecting on the AVR. Then select a movie or something that is broadcast in dolby 5.1 (as 5.1 is not sent down HDMI on the sky box).
