Should the cost of speakers be relative to the cost of your receiver

Hi All

Anyone have any thoughts on how much money you should spend on speakers for a 5.1/7.1 setup in relation to the cost of your receiver?

I'm currently thinking about upgrading my system - slightly behind the times but I really need to get a receiver that handles HDMI (I have Blu-Ray and Sky+HD). I've been thinking about the Pioneer SC-LX81 but know I need to buy some more speakers to really get the best from it. The question is did I ought to be aiming at the higher end of the market for speakers based on the receiver. For instance I am quite interested in the Kef 2005 5.1 speakers which fit into my budget (just) but should I really be thinking about the Kef 3005 5.1 speakers or something even better? Or will the new receiver just get the best out of whatever speakers I buy.

What are your thoughts?

Adrian

Current kit: Samsung LE46M87, Yamaha RX-V657, Panasonic DMP-BD30, Sky+HD and some old Sony 5.1 speakers

That is an excellent amp and I don't think either of those speaker packages will really give you the full benefit. If you read the review here, WHF's recommended package to go with it is the Tannoy Revolution Signature. Given your budget, I think these are going to be too much!

I would take a step back - what is your total budget for amp and speakers?

I agree strongly with the Prof. The Pioneer amp is way too good for any style package in my opinion. You could either go with a £400 amp and the Kefs and save yourself some money, or scale the amp down from the Pioneer a bit and add the savings to the speaker fund.

Thanks guys

Looks like I might have to start saving :) My initial thoughts on budget were around £2500 for receiver and speakers. I've really only just started thinking about what to do hence the request for advice, the more I think about it the more I might have to put off the upgrade for a little longer so that I can afford what I really want.

That's a good budget for a really nice set up. You could get the RS6AV speakers with the Yamaha 863 for instance. That would annihilate the Pioneer/Kef combo you first mentioned.

Yup, you can get a good system with that budget as Gerrard says. To give you an idea, with that budget, I personally would probably look at amps around £800 - £1,000 and put the rest into the speakers (not forgetting budget for cables, speaker stands, equipment racks if necessary etc. etc.).

Up to you if you want to save up more - I'd suggest going for a few auditions at some dealers and see what they recommend, how a system in that price range sounds and compare it with some more expensive systems and see whether you think it's worth the extra wait and money.ÿ
