Hey

Since I have a sony 370, and a new MA 5.1 system and new amp, should I buy a sacd just to see what detail I can get.

From what I read SACD is the best quality you can get, beside a Blu-ray music disc which there only seems to be one.

They are quite cheap, was thinking pink floyd or dire straits, just as a sample?

Or can I download them, legally and stream to the PS3?

Nice 1

The Dire Straits is amazing. Also try War of the Worlds, and DSOTM as has been said before.

By the way, loads of blu ray music videos where you still get really good sound. I have Shakira and Opera/Ballet, but LOADS of rock music out there on Blu Ray music videos.

I found that SACD where are DTS 5.1 48khz never sound as good as downloaded WAV files which are 192khz

I listen to REM - Borderlands last week and the clarity in the 192khz files was just amazing compared to lossless FLAC / APE

A few websites offer 192khz or 88khz music tracks and id suggest giving those a go too

I'll endorse the DSOTM recommendations and suggest Martin Taylor's 'Spirit of Django'. It might also be worth your while seeing if your local library has any SACDs to give you a flavour of their capabilities.

In fact, anythign by Linn for sound quality. I have several of their SACD's and got me into music I didn't think I liked, courtesy of their SACD samplers - there are 4 of them, all priced 5 quid. Bargains.

Is sacd a format that is still going to be here for a while?? I read somewhere that it is slowly falling away as a music format. Having had a quick look on various sites there seems to be a distinct lack of material on sacd. Was thinking about making this a factor in the purchase of my blu ray player but i think if i go ahead with sacd(if there is enough material i like) i will buy a 2nd hand cd/sacd player.

Still lots of classical SA-CDs coming out every month - far more than I can cover in my weekly Gramophone column. Oh, and if you really want to give yourself a sleepless night, give this a burst in all its multichannel splendour...

Yes, classical - here's what I wrote for a forthcoming issue of Gramophone:

'Come Away, Death'
Marianne Beate Kielland (mezzo soprano), Sergej Osadchuk (pno)
2L 2L-064-SACD

Well, here's a jolly little package for an Autumn evening: three settings of Shakespeare's Come Away, Death - by Korngold, Sibelius and Finzi - along with Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death and other pieces related to mortality.

Especially unnerving is Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje's Hvil, which makes full use of the multichannel capabilities of this SA-CD to place the voice before us, singing, speaking and whispering, and the piano's sonorous chords and ominous motifs behind and around the room.

Perhaps not a disc to listen to just before retiring for the night, unless you're intending to do so permanently, but a highly effective, decidedly unsettling listen that shows what multichannel SA-CD can do - it's just a little less disturbing in stereo! - and lives up to 2L's reputation for recording and releasing the unexpected.

I just got a John Legend SACD from US amazon. Pleasantly surprised as it's not my scene. My craving for SACD has lead me along paths I woul dnormally traverse, only ocassionally ending up in a stinky swamp, usually into a beautiful meadow. (Terrible analogy, but still.)

Wonderfully bathetic when juxtaposed with Andrew's review post.
