Hi All. Im just about to move into my new house and before i get the carpets put down i want to run the cables for the speakers under the floor. I was planning on making do with what i have now in terms of equipment but have realised it may be time for a change/upgrade.
I'm using my dad's old Yamaha CR-600 reciever and B&W DM2 speakers and I've also got a pair of Eltax Silverstone 200 floorstanders that I bought from RS about 7-8 years ago. I've got no idea about power, watts etc. but have learnt that the 30w per channel on the receiver probably isn't a good match for the 200w Eltax and is possibly a bit too powerful for the 25w B&Ws. So, the new plan is to keep the vintage stuff together (and not overdrive the speakers) and buy either just a new amp or new amp and speakers for the second room (the original plan was to use the same system in both two different rooms).
The questions I have are: firstly, how good/bad a match are the B&W and Yamaha and is my understanding of the power correct in so far as to say I should be careful with turning them up too much in case the speakers blow?
Secondly, does anyone have any knowledge of the Eltax silverstones? I'd always thought they sounded pretty good but definitely not as good as the B&W but maybe this is due to them being underpowered(if that's possible)? Assuming I keep the Eltax, what sort of amp should i be aiming for - in terms of power and how much will i need to pay? Assuming you say the Eltax are not particularly good, how much should i budget for a amp and speaker package?
I should add that I'm in no way an expert and am not after a top end system as i have neither the money nor the ears to justify it! The second amp will possibly be used in my decks setup if that makes a difference?
My preference is obviously to keep what i've got an just buy a new amp for the Eltax but since they seem quite powerful it looks like it'll cost be a fair bit more to get a higher powered amp, in which case it may be better just starting a fresh and getting something smaller but that matches them for sound quality.
Any advice or recommendations will be most appreciated!
The last thing I should add is that my budget is - as cheap as possible without compromising completely on quality. I doubt i'd notice that big a difference in sound providing it's better than your basic hifi setup!
