Hi All. Im just about to move into my new house and before i get the carpets put down i want to run the cables for the speakers under the floor. I was planning on making do with what i have now in terms of equipment but have realised it may be time for a change/upgrade.

I'm using my dad's old Yamaha CR-600 reciever and B&W DM2 speakers and I've also got a pair of Eltax Silverstone 200 floorstanders that I bought from RS about 7-8 years ago. I've got no idea about power, watts etc. but have learnt that the 30w per channel on the receiver probably isn't a good match for the 200w Eltax and is possibly a bit too powerful for the 25w B&Ws. So, the new plan is to keep the vintage stuff together (and not overdrive the speakers) and buy either just a new amp or new amp and speakers for the second room (the original plan was to use the same system in both two different rooms).

The questions I have are: firstly, how good/bad a match are the B&W and Yamaha and is my understanding of the power correct in so far as to say I should be careful with turning them up too much in case the speakers blow?

Secondly, does anyone have any knowledge of the Eltax silverstones? I'd always thought they sounded pretty good but definitely not as good as the B&W but maybe this is due to them being underpowered(if that's possible)? Assuming I keep the Eltax, what sort of amp should i be aiming for - in terms of power and how much will i need to pay? Assuming you say the Eltax are not particularly good, how much should i budget for a amp and speaker package?

I should add that I'm in no way an expert and am not after a top end system as i have neither the money nor the ears to justify it! The second amp will possibly be used in my decks setup if that makes a difference?

My preference is obviously to keep what i've got an just buy a new amp for the Eltax but since they seem quite powerful it looks like it'll cost be a fair bit more to get a higher powered amp, in which case it may be better just starting a fresh and getting something smaller but that matches them for sound quality.

Any advice or recommendations will be most appreciated!

The last thing I should add is that my budget is - as cheap as possible without compromising completely on quality. I doubt i'd notice that big a difference in sound providing it's better than your basic hifi setup!

I have always used the rule that the amp should be more powerful than the speakers so that clipping distortion doesn't have a chance to ****** them up ie under power is morse than over power. Can't help with your other qns sorry!

Here's more info on the Yamaha and B&W.

Yamaha CR-600: http://www.classic-audio.com/yamaha-cr600-p-808.html

B&W DM2: http://bwgroupsupport.com/downloads/manuals/bw/DM2-OM.pdf

According to the B&W manual, "The power rating of the amplifier will depend on the size of your listening room and the sound level of listening. True RMS outputs of between 15 watts and 60 watts per channel will meet all requirements."

To power the Eltax you could try listening to the Harman Kardon HK3490, available for between £289 and £350 online.

If you want to start a fresh and the "decks setup" you mentioned includes a mixer then you could consider active speakers to connect to its preamp outputs. DV247 currently have B-stock KRK Rokit monitors for £266.50 a pair.

apologies but i got my B&W Ds mixed up - they're D5s and not DM4s although i think the power rating is still the same at 25w. I'm a bit confused now regarding the amp - does that mean it's definitely too powerful or okay? i've never taken it much past half way as my dad always said he thought they'd blow.

as for the Eltax - if i can avoid it i'd prefer to pay a bit less than that if there was something suitable?

i fear this may be quickly turning into a whole system replacement and much greater cost than i'd planned!

out of curiosity, does anyone have much knowledge of how vintage stuff compares with the newer equipment? my dad thinks the amp cost somewhere in the £1000+ mark when he bought it so i assume it was pretty decent at the time but wouldn't know how that would compare with an entry level model these days? i may be doing myself a disservice trying to work around the old stuff

sorry, one last question. Regarding the active speakers - how do they compare to a separate amp and speaker setup - pros/cons etc? the dj setup isn't particularly important as i'm not a keen dj i just like having the records. Would i be wrong in assuming that a £200 pair of active speakers won't be as good as a £200 pair of normal speakers?

This TEAC looks like a good option for your Eltax. More affordable at £139.93 (with a 5 year guarantee only £13.95 extra).

Some positive reviews on Amazon.

Visit your local Pro Audio store and have a listen. They usually have a wide range of models on display.
