I will be getting my TV installed at last! Tomorrow at 2pm to be precise.

Would be ever so grateful for advice as to best settings as this is the bit I hate.

Will be using a THX optimiser after 200 hours but would like to get a good picture for now.

Thanks!

You don't seem to be getting much luck with these! If you don't, you can just run the THX Optimiser when you get the TV, then re-run it after the 200 hour period to ensure everything is still as it should be.

As the prof has said, there is no harm in doing a initial run through the THX optimiser as soon as you get the TV hooked up then return to it after 100-200 hours of useage and re-adjust any settings if needed (I will be very surprised if you don't need to re-adjust anything)

Just avoid using the factory DYNAMIC setting as this will permantly burn your eye balls due to it being seriously OTT with both Contrast and Brightness.

One last thing tho Liz, at first the new Plasma may apear very differant picture wise compared to what you are used to with your old LCD but once you get used to it IMHO you will think the old LCD as a non-natural picture.

Thanks a lot both.

My Plasma is now up and running and it is far better than my LCD so I am now a Plasma convert!!!

I have used the Cinema setting and turned down Contrast and Brightness by a few clicks and am more than happy with the results, though I will use a THX optimiser after 100-200 hours usage (does it matter which?). I turned everything such as Ecomode, overscan etc off and take it this is the correct thing to do? I found that because it's a bright day with cloudy spells that the brightness seemed to fluctuate a bit with Ecomode on. Would I be correct in saying this?

The only slight problem has been a little bit of 'flicker' which can be seen on pure white scenes and not sure whether I can do anything about this?
It won't be enough to bother me though I think. Nothing is perfect after all!

I am really grateful for the help of everyone who gave me advise. Cheers!

Excuse my ignorance but is the lead which connects to my PVR from the TV called an RF lead and, if so, would it be male to female?

I didn't get this with the TV and not sure whether I should have? I took the lead from my LCD but can't find it anywhere so the guy who set up my Tv used one he had in his van. I think I might get another one though.

I have to say that I am really surprised as to how 'bright' my Plasma is. Should I turn down contrast and brightness any more for the first 200 hours?

Okay I have sorted out my previous queries so on to another one now!

I have read that DVDs showing black bars on the top and bottom should be avoided for the first 200 hours. Is this really the case? Hope not!

Oh and one more question! The default setting for side bars is at High and not sure whether this is what it should be?

Normally the RF lead goes from the aerial to the PVR and then this would be connected to the TV via Scart (or HDMI depending on the PVR). Know you have that sorted, but just wanted to make sure it's all right!

As for black bars, I can't see any reason why these should be avoided - yes, if you leave them on the set for ridiculous periods of time, there is possibly a risk of screen burn, but to be honest, I didn't do any preventative measures with my plasma (not even keeping the contrast / brightness turned down low) and 3.5 years later it still works fine. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it (to be safe), but I think these warnings are given out by people worrying too much

Not sure what the setting for side bars is I'm afraid (don't have it on my Panny).

Thanks Prof. You have been a great help as always!

I have to confess that I don't even know what side bars are? High is the default setting.

By the way you never turned up to my cyber party. I was standing there all alone like a right lemon and then just gave up and went home!

I have been told that this isn't a THX certified television so will the THX optimiser still work?

Hi scotsgirl,

Don't worry about the "side bars". It's nothing bad. They come on if you watch an old 4:3 TV program like Friends or Scrubs. On HIGH the bars are bright grey either side of your picture. On MID they are slightly darker and so on until you get to OFF which has black bars.

ECO MODE is worth having on, IMHO. It adjusts the brightness and contrast to suit the ambient lighting, thus lowering the power consuption at night. This means, to the eye, you should see the same picture whether it's bright sunshine outside or 11pm in a darkened room.

Pesonally, I find you should set the picture settings to the sort of picture that you like, The THX optimizer might be a reasonable guide but we all look for different things from a picture.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks a lot Stan007. I appreciate the advice.

I agree in that picture settings are individual but I just always wonder whether I could get it better.

I am just going to leave it now until the 200 hour 'run in' period is over and see what it is like then. Otherwise I will have a constant headache!

Is it true that Plasmas improve over time and, if so, in what way?

Personally, I don't really think they do. Maybe a tiny bit over the first couple of days but nothing drastic. :)
