Hi Everyone

I have a pair of Quad ESL 57’s and am thinking of adding a subwoofer but have absolutely no idea of how to set one up.

I am using a Roksan K2 as a preamp and the power from two Quad II mono blocks. The K2 has a subwoofer/power amp output but it is either/or. How would I incorporate the subwoofer, and is there a danger that if I daisy chain the preamp – subwoofer – power amp – speakers (or something like that) I would lose sound quality?

Thanks

You will be able to feed most subs by running a connection from the speaker terminals. Opinions vary as to whether this type of connection or from a line out (from a pre-amp) is better...many, many variables to consider!!

In short it can be done - personally, I think you'd have to spend a pretty penny on the sub quick enough to keep up with a set of electrostatics. Quad never made a sub to partner their electrostatics but did use subs from a Finnish company called Gradient. I think they still exist.

Another company to consider is TD Eclipse - they make singe driver speakers which are very well regarded and have an accompanying sub but I think it runs to about £3k or so.

I would use a high level lead and connect to your speaker outputs. Patience is the main thing and spending a good amount of time postioning the subwoofer can make all the difference. A good unit from REL would be a starting point but as Bodfish says you will need to spend a bit of cash to get the best out of the system. Subs at £1k plus would be my suggestion.

I tried a sub with my system and hated it. It ruined the balance. A defo try before you buy experiment!
