System so far : Panasonic plasma, sony BDP-S350, Onkyo TX-SR605 AMP, Monitor Audio style speakers (225's Front & Center, 90's rear) and MJ Acoustics pro 50Mk2 sub.

Sub is hooked up using LFE input, Blueray - HDMI - AMP - HDMI - TV

Basically set the system up a while ago using the speaker setup microphone with the amp and am pleased with what i'm getting but want to make the most out of what i have! I have been looking at speaker crossover settings and phase, but different places seem to say different things! Can anyone shed a little light on this subject with respect of settings on amp and or sub?

I am also wondering what is meant to be better with respect of sound from the blueray, de-coding onboard or in the amp?

Thank for any help

Jon

Really down to the equipment used

Crossover settings are usually near the bottom of the scale to be at their best (But sub and/or speaker dependent). Set the FRONTS as large and all the others to SMALL (So all bass is sent to the fronts). Or fronts as SMALL if theyre no god for bass

Id say around 60Hz as a general rule of thumb. usually you have the option of sub or sub and fronts for bass so try both and see which you think sounds best. Set the subs crossover and amplification so it all 'gels' well at the lower frequencies (Its just a case of playing about and see ~ generally I turn the sub up so I can just hear it then play about with the crossover and then listen to various tracks/films to see what its like)

As for decoding, im pretty sure the Onkyo will do a better job of it

Unless if u have a huge speakers that can go down flat to 25-30HZ, u realy want everything set to small -or better if your amp. let you set the crossover independtely to each speaker , look at your speakers spec. and see how deep they can go down ,and then set the crossover for that speaker about 10-20% above the given HZ number ,for example my kef iq7 according to the spec. can handel bass down to 40HZ so i put the crossover for them at 70HZ because i know at some point in the low-bass freq. they will begin to distort before they reach 40HZ , all speakers distort at some point in the low-bass freq. trust me nothing can handel low-bass like a subwoofer....The rest of the speakers and the subwoofer are all set to 80HZ. both your speakers and amp. will love you for it.and by doing this u would gain more clarity and focus in the mid-range and upper-end while your subwoofer is taking care of all that deep bass.

Thanks for ur reply, made the most sense so far about setting speaker levels. Any chance you could shed some light on the kind of level i should set the cutoff! (not sure the exact term) but the line that splits what is sent to sub and what goes to speakers (set in amp). should this line overlap the speaker Hz or be the same?

Any light shed most appreciated, thank

Exactly! the crossover set in amp. should be cutoff above the speakers HZ .

unfortunatly i don,t know the exact spec. for your speakers, but start with 80HZ seting for all speakers & sub. and then go up to 90HZ , 100HZ, and listen to what would give the best sounding result

Wellcome Jon!
