A mate of mine has the 40" w4500, I've seen some football and a couple of other shows on his sky+. I thought the picture quality of the dramas was fantastic, with the football not far behind. I saw no problem with fast moving images, even the poorer south american broadcasts faired well. This made my mind up as to buying this tv.

Not very nice imo and that includes the latest Z series 200hz sets. Can't comment on motion blur, I'm sure that's sorted mostly by now but SD pictures in general are dire, there's no other word for it but most large screen lcd's seem the same to me in this respect apart perhaps from philips 'true pixel' upmarket sets but I can't stand the look of them. At least they are compared to Pioneers Kuros range and even Panasonic plasmas. I kind of look at it this way, I can spend a grand on something that annoys me for a long time to come or twice as much and I like to look at it every day.

I have the older model W2000 and think that the picture is excellent. This is from a Sky HD box connected via hdmi. I strongly believe that these screens have been manufactured to be used with hdmi and when connecting to a standard sat box via scart, you are never going to get a great picture.

I don't think it's just Sony. All the screens I've seen (including Pioneer plasmas - albeit a few years old ones) that are connected by scart, do not have a great picture. Whack in an hdmi and hey presto. Component offers a much better image too. I would even buy a second hand Sky HD box and not pay the £10 a month for the HD channels (you would still get BBC HD and CD HD) so that you would get hdmi connectivity and an upscaled SD picture.

Watched a footy match on Freeview last week -live from Germany - on my 52W4000.

Looked much better than the tripe usually served up on Match of the Day ; yet both BBC !

Picture quality was astonishing (for SD ) ; where was the smearing ? Why was there only one (clear ) ball on the pitch?

There is a young man in my local Panasonic centre who tells anyone vaguely interested in football that a large plasma screen is the only option. I wish he had been sat on my settee that evening.

so its just a case of hdmi connection why have i never heard of this before? the lcd/plasma argument is now then irelavent if it comes down to the fact that the only way is to get your sd source is through hd box via hdmi, lcd or plasma

For instance i dont think i have read anyone who has a virgin v + complaining about there sd performance.

I have the 40w2000 and there zero smearing! It maybe that your friend has all the bells and whistles turned on eg noise filters/sharpness ect ect this will lead to smearing but a little carefull setup and the problems eliminated. i watch lots of footie and the SD picture is great

Gareth has hit the nail on the head. I have a Sony KDL-32S2510 which is now a couple of generations old. Out of the box SD looked pretty ropey. 2 weeks of tweaking it and its looked consistently good ever since.

I always advise customers to spend some time tweaking the settings a little bit at a time. I also agree about HDMI upscaling. It really does make a big difference to SD performance on LCD sets.

I have the same screen as Gareth and I googled the recommended settings for this screen. When I changed the settings as instructed it was a massive difference.

Have to say, having lived with the 40W4500 for a few days now, i'm finding the freeview SD experience pretty ropey, depsite tweaking the settings. Can't fault HD or the black levels, but as someone who watches a lot of freeview this is concerning. Would someone be able to post their settings on this thread to optimise Freeview, would be much appreciated.

If the built-in tuner on the 40w4500 is as bad as the one on my 40w2000 then it's unlikely you'll get a decent SD picture from it - I get the best SD pictures from my Sky HD box. In fact, I don't even plug in the aerial to the TV anymore since there's such awful crosstalk whilst watching another source with headphones on!

I bet manufacturers are looking forward to the day when SD gets binned for good. TVs getting larger whilst living rooms get smaller means we're all watching proportionally much closer than 10 years ago, and making a 40in+ TV look good with SD *and* HD out-of-the-box must be hard, especially at the cheaper end of the model lines.

I have to disagree with the last few comments on the poor SD performance of this set.

-Properly set up this is probably one of the better LCD sets for SD (As long as its not analogue your watching) Most of the previous Sony LCD's have been pretty bad but the W4500 is a big improvement. For SD or digital TV set motion flow to high and noise reduction to medium, sharpness 75% and mpeg noise reduction of off, For DVD movies set movie mode 2, Set 100hz motion flow to "off" as it does strange things with the movement. It should remember settings on each input so you don't have to keep messing. If you need advice on other settings just ask.

If you watch a lot standard def TV (and most of us still do) and you just want a big flat screen TV you will not do better than a Panasonic PX70 & PX80 series Plasmas! I have spent months looking at different TV's side by side on HD and SD and trust me on this -you will not get a cleaner, smoother picture than the Panny with SD. The HD is pretty good as well considering it's only a 1024 res panel, (as are the early Pioneers) the later PZ models are actually worse for SD because of the amount of pic processing going on. I have seen the 42 inch advertised for £600 recently (Incredible bargain) get one soon as supply is drying up.

Coming back to the Sony; the W4500 is a damn good TV at any price, you will be hard pressed to find a better LCD screen for HD at the moment for £849.00 if you shop around, so stop complaining and try setting it up properly.

Got the 40w2000. No probs on sd,also use it quite a lot by routing thru a HDD recorder and then on with HDMI. Would agree with all the other posters regarding getting the settings right. There are a lot of posts on this site on settings to use.

Also dont forget these tvs are awful out of the box ,they need tweaking.Get the ariel checked as well as they degrade with age.Its no good having a state of the art new Tv with a ten year old ariel plugged into it.
