SD on KDL40W4000

Hi, I viewed the 40W4000 about 6 months ago and found that the amount of digital artifacts / noise was just not acceptable for me (sitting approx 9 ft from the screen). Since then I have viewed the 40W4500 (better but still not great) and the 40Z4500. To be honest it was only the Z4500 that I found "acceptable" and would actually want to watch in my lounge. Don't get me wrong, it's still not perfect, but IMO what I would class as "acceptable." Saying this though, everyone has a different perspective on "acceptable" so you might find the W4000 to be perfectly OK for you. I would try and track one down in a Sony centre for a viewing as they tend to use reasonable quality signal feeds so gives you a good idea of the pic quality in your lounge (as opposed to the currys / comet brigade that I've found use a rubbish SD signal so make the TV's looks worse than the are in reality).

Hope this helps,

Sam

Sam, so kind of you to help me through one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make in a long time! Very much appreciated. I think I'm getting the picture (!!) ... which is, really, those who mostly watch SD (as most do I suspect) shouldn't yet buy bigger than 32" LCDs. I've just bought my son a 32" W4000 Sony (mainly for gaming) and the SD off freeview is just about acceptable from about 3m. Was hoping the 40" might be too, but from what you say that's unlikely! It's what to go for instead that's causing a headache... around the £750 mark + 5yr guarantee... maybe a bit more. Have to travel a bit to get to a Sony Centre but will be doing so... as you say, the currys and comet places don't help a jot in choosing a TV!

Best wishes and a Merry Christmas!

Hi Alan -

It's been said many times on this site, but don't forget the Plasma choice in the Panasonic TH-37PX80 (or the 42") - I just changed from a 32" Sony LCD, and it's excellent on SD and everything else too! There are some great deals on it at the moment, and you really should check it out.

Hi Naxos

That is the impression I've been gathering, that (in my price range) panasonic plasmas are the best alternative for freeview SD over 32". Think I'll probably 'join the other side' and get one, just need to look into sizes and models... 37 or 42, PZs or PXs etc. At the very least, I know there's a very satisfied user of a 37PX80! Thanks for that... maybe starting a 200 hour 'warm up' over Christmas!
