Samsung Laptops - Good or Horror-ble?

Thinking of this one:

Not sure about the "sticky fingers" concept - Bestbuy are selling "conducting wooly gloves for touchscreen monitors" for pity's sake - but the rest of the spec looks good.

Being a recent convert to SSDs I'd probably swap the 1TB spinning rust for a 500 gig Samsung SSD.

Thoughts?

Samsung laptops I have no experience with. Imo Asus and Lenovo are the brands to go for.

Mainly because I've used them and because of inside information on laptops returned for repairs at a local PC store.

Apparently both Asus and Lenovo are quite reliable.

My personal preference for home use would be Asus.

I'm a bit of a geek and have built a range of computers and played with many more. Samsung laptops are great and offer good support. The laptop you linked is an awesome deal, the 3gen i7 is amazing, coupled with 8gb ram and a 1tb disk, awesome! If you have the cash you should seriously consider upgrading to an ssd, you can get good deals on Samsung SSD which are well respected in the PC building community but you don't need to upgrade, you'll probably find the HDD that comes installed will be no slouch as it's a relatively high density 2.5 inch disk. if I could get a similar priced laptop with the same spec this side of the pond for £600 then I'd be a very happy man.

I've got a 10 year old Samsung laptop &, although the spec is very outdated, it still works really well.

Well. I got one for my birthday. :dance:

The model I highlighted in the linkey above, from Bestbuy, 1200 Dolllars plus tax, with a free 1-year Kaspersky Internet Security thrown in (woo-hoo).

So far, so good. Compared to my three year old Toshiba laptop the display is superb, full HD and I'm glad I have new glasses to be able to read the type it's that small!

Not as fast as my desktop (i7-3930K hex core with 32 gigs of RAM and an SSD), but then it wouldn't be would it? On the benchmarks I'm getting a pretty solid 17500 ish, which is pretty good I think. Doesn't seem to be a way of getting the otherboard to overclock, but then on a laptop who would expect that?

It came with Windows 8 point zero, which was a bit of a pain, as I had to spend most of my birthday loading Windows 8.1 and then all the software. Oh well.

The RAM is configured as one 8-gig DIMM, so first upgrade will be another DIMM. An SSD would help but that'll be after Xmas now.

All-in-all very pleased.
