Hi all. I'm stumped, so would really appreciate some advice.

I'm after a new TV. I like Samsungs, so figure i'll get another one. That narrows my choice down somewhat.

I'm now stuck between a 55" 7 Series (either Plasma or LED) or the 46" 8 Series.

I know very little about TVs but know that I want the 3D capability and the Internet stuff (LoveFilm, iPlayer etc)

Would I be better going for the Plasma or with LED, and is the 8 series much better than the 7?

Price wise, the 46" 8 series is about the same price at the 55" 7 series, with the Plasma being cheapest.

Thanks a lot.

The 55" plasma has just won the award for best 3d tv. I can confirm that the internet@tv service on the Samsungs is very slick and the BBC iPlayer very good. It's better than the sony version.

Thanks a lot.

I was erring towards going for the larger Plasma. Was told by "Man in other brand TV shop" at lunch that LED was better than Plasma though (although said brand don't do Plasma TVs anymore- which may have influenced it!)

3D would only make up a tiny % if my viewing though. For normal Blu-Ray DVDs and Sky HD would the Plasma still be best?

Thinking that 55" might be too big for my front room. Would you go for the 8 series 46" or the 7 series 46" both LED?

Is there much of a difference (other than cost)

I recently purchased a Samsung LED ue46b7020 (no 3D but internet enabled). My TV suffers from massive bleeding and or clouding (white patches during dark scenes) which seems to be a side effect of the technology. They even created a feature called Auto Dimming that reduces the brightness of the whites in the dark scenes to counteract the clouding. The results is ... you can't see anything!

I therefore recommend that you pay close attention to this when considering the LED (especially since the bleeding/clouding seems to be worse on bigger screens). You will probably not notice anything in a showroom because of the very bright environment so ask the shop to set the TV on Movie settings. This hould help you a little bit.

In my case this really spoils my enjoyment since now I am constantly distracted by the clouding when watching a movie with dark scenes (pretty much all movies).

If I had a chance to do it again, I would go for a plasma.

Interesting. Thanks a lot.

This gets more and more confusing.

To confuse things even more. I want to get a Blu-Ray player at the same time. If I get a Samsung TV would you recommend I get a Samsung Blu-Ray player too, or does that not make any difference?

Samsung's 7 series Plasmas are available as 50 or 63 inch (they don't make a 55 inch) so that may mean the 50 inch could be ok for your room. The Samsung which won an award was the 6 series (PS50C6900) which is a 50inch.

Getting a Samsung Blu-Ray will give you very little advantage (you can probably use the one remote control for both TV and Blu-Ray player). The Sony's are really the pick of the bunch at the moment. The only other advantage to buying a Samsung Blu-Ray may be that some dealers are bundling a them with the Samsung TVs.

If you are spending this kind of cash, you really should go to a dealer and compare the plasma with the LCD screens and see which one gives you the most enjoyable picture.

Good hunting

Rob

And, TyTyTy21, as your screen is obviously so bad, have you tried calling Samsung customer service and seeing what they can do for you? If it's under a year old, then they should do something about it. In my experience, Samsung have one of the best customer service departments (undoubtably 47 other people will come on here to disagree with that statement, but in my most recent dealings with them they were superb). Only thing I'd say, is call them; don't bother with the email contact as that really is useless.

Thanks Rob. You are right, I meant 50".

Will read up on the Blu-Ray players too. Some places seem to rate the Samsungs whilst others go for the Sony.

I did read that the Samsung Blu Ray comes with the Wi-Fi dongle. That should mean I can use LoveFilm etc without needing anything else shouldn't it?

I want to spend around £1300-1500 on the TV, £200-250 on the Blu Ray really.

if u have a samsung tv + samsung blu-ray then they use a thing called bd-wise to connect which supposedly automatically selects optimum settings. If u buy the 2 together u get the 3d accessory pack - 2 pairs 3d glasses + monster v alien 3d blu-ray.

the 3d samsung bd-c6900 has wifi built-in and doesnt need a dongle.

I would pick the 8series over the 7series for the localised dimming.

Hi Stuart,

The only Samsung 3D Blu-ray that comes with installed wi-fi is the C6900 - £250 on Amazon. And yes it does mean you can get Lovefilm etc. without having to buy a separate USB dongle.

The Sony BDP-S570 is £168 (again on Amazon). It's just won the What Hi-Fi Product of The Year Blu-Ray award. It is 3D and Wireless is installed as well, so you can get Lovefilm etc . And that £80 difference buys quite a handful of Blu-Rays !!

Yet more decisions for you !

Lovefilm is currently not available on the bd-c6900. When u load the widget is just says 'Lovefilm coming Soon' and has been saying this for the last 3 months or so.

All Samsung TVs have lovefilm working though - so its not a huge issue...

Thanks guys. Do you know if the 8 Series comes in Plasma as well?

This gets more and more confusing. I'm just going to have to bite the bullet. That Sony BluRay sounds great, but will it out-weight the benefits of having the same brand for both DVD and TV.

Can anyone recommend where to go to get the 3D package with the Glasses etc? I was looking at "Beyond Television" or "RGB Direct". They seemed to have the best individual prices, but no mention of the freebies.

Thanks a lot everyone.

More research done. That Sony BluRay looks great. Think I am sold on that.

Problem- 8 Series does not come in Plasma. So........ do you think I should go 7 series 50 inch plasma, or pay a little more and go smaller and get the 8 series 46 inch lcd?

Thanks again.

Personally I'd go with the PS50C7000 Plasma over the LED/LCD, the 7000 plasma has the real black filter is also very thin and IMHO has far more convincing 3D over any LCD I have seen.

Hi Stuart,

The only 8 series plasma on Samsung's website is last year's 850 (which wasn't 3D and had some 'issues' shall we say).

It does look as if a lot of dealers are only doing deals with free glasses and player on the LED series of LCDs, probably because they cost a lot more and so have a bigger profit margin to allow the dealers to do this. You could try bending a local dealer's arm if you wanted to go for the plasma. From the 3D point of view, the samsung plasma is far better than their LCDs, and IMO is better all round. I'm not sure how many pairs of glasses you need, but if it's only 2, then there should be a free pair in the box with the PS50C7000, and if you go to:

http://www.samsungconnect.co.uk/

you can register for a second pair for free.

As for the Blu-Ray, I'd go for the Sony. Spending a not inconsiderable sum on a 3D TV, first and foremost, you ought to be feeding it with the best picture you can and by all accoiunts the Sony has by far the best picture in both 2D and 3D.

Also, I'd agree with DJ K, go for the 7000 rather than the 6900 if you can find one.

Good luck

Rob

Thanks a lot.

I'd just about convinced myself to go for the 8 series LCD too!!

Plasma it is, along with the Sony DVD. Thanks guys.

Out of interest, I don't play the Xbox that much these days, but if I did would the Plasma still be the best choice?
