At the moment Samsung is sticking to LCD for the '6' series sets - it has a couple of plasmas in the slightly lower-spec '5' series, and there are some to come in the 7 series and above, too (see story here).

I certainly will be checking it out, as Samsung previously haven't mentioned it to us (this could possibly be why they've just dumped their PR agency

We're told that there's a Series 6 plasma, the 656, coming in 50 and 58in screen sizes with 4 x HDMI and Samsung's WiseLink Pro feature, but we haven't received our review samples yet. There's also a Series 7 plasma due in September.

You see, we checked it out! Apologies for any earlier confusion - we do try and keep on top of every single TV model coming out, but the manufacturers don't always make it easy

Right, here's an update on the update. We have had the 5-series 50in Plasma in - the PS50A556/7/8 (end number dependent on where you buy, but essentially a 5-series set. Review in next issue, out next Thursday.

6-series plasmas, meanwhile - 50 and 58in versions - 'only just becoming available', hence non-appearance on Samsung website.

I hate manufacturers model numbers - they're all clearly designed to deceive as far as I can tell. Why not just have the Pioneer 42P1 (first generation 42" plasma screen from Pioneer), the Panasonic 46L3 (46" third generation LCD screen from Panasonic) LG 32L7 (seventh generation 32" LCD from LG) etc. etc. It would make everyone's life so much easier!

And hallelujah to that! Take Samsung, for example. They made a big thing at CES of simplifying their model numbers into series - like BMW cars - so you knew that, say, a 6 series TV is a better spec than a 5 series TV.

That's great - but then they buried those key numbers in a sea of other alphanumerics, plus have persisted with their old trick of giving different model numbers to essentially the same set so it looks like certain retailers have an 'exclusive' TV.

Anyhow, enough ranting: the test team have finished the review of the 50in Samsung 5-series plasma and it should be online later today.

Hi,ÿ
No disrespect but that review was extremely sparse! Looks like the WHF team are all exhausted answering to all the posts on the forums!

This is exactly how it used to work and was a far more PUNTER FRIENDLY method. EG when I got My first Plasma the model was a Panasonic 42""PW5DB and that was it! Simple its a Panasonic, it's 42"" and its a series 5 screen.

Now its a potential mine field with the Consumer never quite sure exactly what TV they are getting with all these ever so slightly differing model numbers, and slightly differant looks to the set dependant upon where You get it from! IS the ne in Dixons the same as the one in Comet? and what about the one in Currys or John Lewis???? and which one did I read the review for? and does that review cover all these slightly diifferant model numbers???
