Hi their,

I have a Sony 32W5500, Sky HD box and a Yamaha RX-V465 amp.

I have the LCD connected to the Sky HD box via HDMI and then I have an Optical connected to the Yamaha amp for the DD surround sound on the movies.

I don't fully know what is the best way to connect it all up. Would I connect the Sky HD box direct to the amp and then my tv to the amp too? My TV also has an optical out, so would this be connected? If not what is the idea of the TV having an optical out?

Can someone list the ideal way to connect it so I can have a play about with it this week? Any advice would be most welcome for a relatively noob to the amp world.

I have used a QED HDMI lead and optical lead but if I need to connect more items to the amp via HDMI would you advise to buy more expensive HDMI leads or would my standard ones do the job.

I know when I get a blu ray player I would use a good lead as this is carrying the dolby true / dts HD audio.

HDMI from sky HD straight to your tv,
Optical from sky HD to your amp,
HDMI from amp straight to your tv,
& the optical out from your tv to your amp,
when you get blu-ray HDMI to your amp, thats is it, two connections, power supply & HDMI,
&/or ethernet cable.

Hope this helps.

Ensure your Sky +HD box is set to "DOLBY D" in the sound settings menu.

You would connect your TV up to the amp if you wanted 'pseudo' surround sound from the TV's tuner or stereo sources (Example Nintendo wii) that are connected to the TV. As your Sky+HD box has twin tuners, whereby you can watch one channel and record another you probably don't watch Freeview anyway. I certainly don't.

Your cabling setup looks fine.

As for buying more expensive HDMI leads, that's a resounding NO from me. Just buy a good quality lead from a reputable supplier. I use MarkGrant, tmfsolutions and hdcable for all my HDMI cables and have tested expensive ones. No difference for me. They are all built to the same spec but obviously some use more exotic materials. Check hdmi.org and bluejeanscables.com for FAQ's on HDMI. Even cheap leads will pass 1080p/24fps and HD audio over short distances. It is only over long distances, where lower quality cabling (more expensive isn't always a guarantee of success either) struggles (usually manifests as a blank picture or sparklies (rare)) as HDMI was never designed for it.

Thanks for that.

Out of interest what does the optical from the TV actually do? Never has this before on an LCD?

It's just an audio output and in this case, it's digital. On Freesat TV's it's useful as you can output DD5.1 from selected programming e.g. BBCHD.
