Do you think the placebo effect exists?

Yes I do. But I don't think it happens 100% of the time like you guys make it out to be.

Unfortunately that statement is false. Not everybody is using it 100% of the time. Nobody on here would argue about certain things, such as speakers making a difference - nobody... and as I have said before, just because somebody may alude to the placebo effect or expectation bias taking place, it doesn't mean that the listener is not hearing differences, if anything the opposite, so I honestly feel as though you're rallying against the wrong thing here and seemingly taking personal offence when it's not actually there.

I agree. At the same time you cannot also prove that it was at work.

I just think it's rude when somebody sincerely tries to share something and that gets thrown at them. Seriously, it's not far from outright calling them dumb and naive.

I will admit that I've been rude and impolite myself lately and I regret it, but it's just from my frustration of seeing people come in here with an innocent request for cable suggestions, and then seeing the thread escalate into 400+ argument posts, almost all of which doesn't address the OP's original request for suggestions. Seriously, it's just turning a lot of people off.

:O This thread has decended into boringness.

Unfortunately that's what happens when every attempt by somebody to share their experience gets met by the Placebo Effect response. Somehow there are a bunch of people in here who feel clever throwing that blunt response out every time.

I can't think of anything else to describe it really and as no one can come up with any evidence to the contrary these things actualy work i am afraid this is what we are left with.........

Its all about what YOU can hear. If YOU cant hear the difference, dont buy the cables. Simples.

Personally, when I bought a tacima mains conditioner, I plugged it in and noticed a difference. The sound became smoother. I liked it so I kept it. Then I tried some Clearer Audio copper-line alpha power cables to my cd player and amplifier. I got better bass weight and definition. I liked the change so I kept them.

Overall I heard improvement. Thats my point. If you cant hear a difference then fair enough. Save the money and put it towards something else.

Placebo Effect.

There's no other way to call this but rude

As you say people come on here looking for answers to questions and this one was about the claims of a certain company about a product that some naive customers might part with their hard earned for, when in fact they would be wasting their money on something that has been shown time and again to be absolute rubbish.

sometimes though, one can. Say HDMI cables for example, it's possible to prove they are not making any difference, it's a lot easier to do it in the digital realm.

Just for sake of discussion, lets take the fabled Brilliant Pebbles - http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina31.htm

Do you think they work? These people do http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina19.htm

And who are we to say that they are not hearing any difference? Just in the same way that people on here say they hear or see differences, when technically there should be none. That's why some people will say Placebo or expectation bias. It's been proven in the coke/pepsi tests that peoples actual brain go through a change when they blind test to actually seeing the can.

This is usually where the arguments occur though. People may post technical info to be met with "but I hear the difference". Yes, I have no doubt they are hearing something different personally, but it may not actually be a real world change of the (insert whatever device/cable you want here). I think the problems them stem from the fact that in some cases people are going to get defensive if somebody has just proven to them on a technical level that the couple of hundred quid they just dropped on something doesn't make any real world difference. It still doesn't mean that they are not hearing it though, and that's sometimes where the tehcnical people fall down and have problems accepting that somebody is hearing something different. It's human nature to get defensive in situations like that, and equally so, get angry, as you say, they feel as though they are being treat as dumb and naive, on both sides/ This I blame on the internet and forums as it's hard to put across certain things in blocks of text. Where somebody may be just trying to say, hey it's ok, no worries, it may not come off like that. And on the other side of the coin, some people just want others to take stock, not be drawn in to marketing hype and lies and then running with it. I mean how far do you think a thread on the Brilliant pebbles would get, but using your logic, how can anybody say they are wrong?

I don't think there's any particular solution to the issue, it's the way the internet has been, even before the www came about people were doing exactly this on newsgroups.

But again, that's the inherited nature of the free speech the internet affords us all. Why can't somebody say "well actually, those cables technically make no difference"? Why do they have be lists of recommendations? We all get frustrated at times, it's just life and I personally get frustrated when people put the equipment before the music, but I also understand why they do. So long as we can debate and constantly challenge our own ideas then it's no bad thing imho.

I've not followed the thread, so no idea about the rudeness. Maybe he who is without sin in that area should cast the first stone.

If somebody hears a difference when plugging in another cable (while the first cable was arguably a good enough cable), then that is perfectly normal. There is nothing dumb about it.

It, however, gets silly when people do not wish to accept that what they hear could be caused by the placebo effect and insist that they are hearing actual changing in the sound produced rather than imaginary ones. It is my feeling that most of the heated debates here are with this category of people.

And yes, you have been very rude. There really is little excuse for your behaviour.

I've never tried Russ Andrew's products - so I don't know. However, a fairly basic grap of electronics would suggest that they shouldn't make any differnce to a modern amplifier. But anything's possible. I used to know a very sweet elderly nun, who was an avid supporter of the Irish football team (who else). She used to put a holy statue on top of the television to make them play better. During one world cup game its seemed to be working to great effect - until someone pointed out to her that the team in green was Mexico and Ireland were actually in white. Subjectivity is a wonderful thing and faith can move mountains! Not of course that I am suggesting that Russ Andrew's products and religious staues have anything in common. Certainly not the price anyway.
