Hello folks 😉

I just got my first hi-fi gear; a preamp, poweramp and cd-player, connected to my dads 20 years Panasonic old speakers (which isn't hi-fi in any way xD), but will of course be buying some new speakers next month.

My question is: will my amps and cd-player benefit from being used for a while, (running in) just like speakers do?

Not really. Bit of a myth. 30 minutes to an hour after switching on from cold is all it needs.

Many manufacturers say that running in does make a difference. Leave it running music for a few days, then don't switch it off.

Leave mine on all the time, as cyrus sounds not right from cold.

Some say yes, some say no....I say if you have it switched on then you had just as well play some music...

Ok, im gonna stick my oar in.

Running in/burning in of equipment is necessary and does make a difference. I have also experienced differences in sound many times with the addition of new cables, especially power cables and audio grade fuses as they burn in

Some of the changes you hear in amps and cd players etc will be due to it warming up as well as burning in.
I recently bought a pre and power amp second hand, and it took a few days to sound its best as it hadn't been powered up in a while.

You will notice, with new amps in particular,a distinct smell of electronic components from its vents as it gets hot the first number of times you use it. This is because everything inside it is new and all the materials are settling down with use. It will smell less and less with age as its components will be fully burned in.

Thank you all for your answers 😉

I think I will continue listening to all the music I can and then look forward to getting some real hi-fi speakers 😀

Uh, and maybe you would answer one more question?

My room is 3.5x2.5 m. My preamp is Emotiva USP-1, my poweramp is Emotiva XPA-2 and my cd-player is Emotiva ERC-1. What speaker do you think would be great for me? My budget is around 707 pounds 😛

Thats a nice powerful amp you have there, although im not familiar with the emotiva sound.

Are you looking for standmount or floor standing speakers?

If you can stretch the budget a little, some ATC scm11's or you'd pick up some ex dem or used ones for around the £550 mark.

What chebby said. An hour. Max. The electronics don't need any longer than the time it take them to warm up to their optimum operating temperature.

It must depend on the Amp and CD player ,I guess. My Lyngdorf amp sounded great from the first but the CD player was completely different. It sounded horrible at first ,very thin and reedy.I plugged my AVI CD player back in to confirm what I was hearing and there was no comparison. After 100 hours they were equal in quality of sound and after 200 hours I preferred the Lyngdorf (luckily). No idea why though!

I would run in an amp for at least a couple of years. Make sure you listen to music while you're doing so, and remember to switch it off when not in use.
